thanks Rivenathos. I think it may be fixed. I couldn't find the system sound icon on the panel and when I installed gnome alsa it appeared and Rhythm box seems to be playing now. The greying of the screens when I'm looking at videos has happened on the bbc iplayer and on Youtube not in Rhythmbox.
