Gnome to KDE

Hey all. I'm pretty new to the Linux universe (roughly a month in now), and I can remember when I was researching about distributions, and what I might find useful, what might be a good candidate for a beginner such as myself, and after a few days of no success, I struck gold with Mint 7 "Gloria". Not really knowing the difference between Gnome and KDE at the time, I naturally downloaded and installed the 'Main' version of Gloria, and was all smiles.

A few days ago while messing around on the internet, I stumbled upon Sabayon 5.0 KDE, and loved it. The only problem is that I'm still new to Linux all around, and the little experience I have is with Mint/Ubuntu, so Gentoo while not frustrating, was a little less appealing.

And then I remembered Mint 7 was also available in "Community Editions", a.k.a.; I am currently downloading Gloria in KDE, and I'm excited.

Basically, all of this was to say how's it going, and thank you to the Mint team for a great product that anyone can learn and use, and for working so hard to make it available in the format of our choosing as the users.

Keep it up guys, you're doing a great job, and a great service to those who are Linux gurus, and those like me, freshly migrating from Windows!

Hmm. I like to switch back and forth between Xfce and Gnome, myself.(Dual-boot) My wife prefers Gnome, so we compromised. Gnome is always Mint, but the Xfce partition changes distros frequently, because I am restless and curious.

Then there are those who just love KDE. For me, it's just not my flavor. KDE aims to be a completely graphical environment. You might decide it's for you, and that would be fine. No one here will think any less of you; the KDE people are part of the Mint community, and we respect them. [ I'm smiling when I say that. Just my dry wit coming out. ] It's just not my cup of tea.

Personally, I feel that Gnome is the right choice for the main edition of Mint, just as it is the right choice for Debian and Ubuntu. I also feel that Mint has more of the right feel in its adaptation of the Gnome desktop. I find it more intuitive, since I am a Windows XP refugee, and I can't help but believe that others will also be comfortable with it.

Of course, when Helena KDE is released, I will not be able to resist the temptation to download it and take a look. After all, I still have discs to burn. I would even seed the torrent for them.

I have been using LinuxMint-7 as the primary OS on my PC.
Gnome seems to the most user friendly of the Desktop Enviroments/Window Managers for new beginners to Linux. More so, than KDE.
And the LinuxMint Dev Team has done a great job in compiling Gnome/Main edition as being user-friendly and giving us that 'out of the box' experience.

I personally, have never liked the 'feel' of KDE ... I dunno, it just doesn't sit right with me.
But, many, many people swear by KDE, and that's OK.

I am using Xfce 4.6.1 as the Desktop on my Debian Squeeze (testing) . . . and I am loving Xfce.
Also, using LinuxMint-7 Xfce on my older laptop, with no problems.

The speed and customisation of Xfce is unmatched by either Gnome or KDE.
There are, of course, many other Desktop Envirments you can try with LinuxMint or Ubuntu.

But, when I upgrade (fresh install) to LinuxMint-8 Helena (Main Edition) ... it will still be with the Gnome desktop.

It's interesting how many people come into to KDE CE portion of the boards to talk about how much they like Gnome better. I think we should always be considerate of anyone who's here and encourage them to stick around - and contribute. The OP didn't ask which DE is better. He posted in the KDE CE forums to say thanks.

Just because Mint KDE is a "CE" doesn't mean it's users should be made to feel 2nd class. I'm basing this on the last several posts in the KDE forums about people who love Mint KDE. When someone posts a compliment in the XFCE forums, you guys (always the same ones) don't jump in there and say how superior Gnome is.

All in all, I think Boo should be proud of KDE CE. After all, we don't need two versions of Mint Gnome.

Although you are all right - to each their own, we would all be better served if, unless asked, you just welcomed them to Mint and that's that. Again, unless asked, at which point you can get out your bow and arrows and shoot away

Why don' t you just install the mint kde desktop (not using mint so not 100% sure it exist or whether or not it needs extra repositories enabled) but it seems much easier than reinstalling...

I guess, like Colonel Schell, I was just perusing the Forums and looking at 'new posts'
not paying any attention to which side of the board I was on.
(I didn't know there were sides?)

I stand corrected . . . and offer my apologies to KDE
I was not putting any CE, DE or WM down . . . I certainly meant no offense to anyone.

I really don't care which CE/DE/WM anyone uses . . . I'm just happy they have discovered Linux OSs.

Hehe... Didn't expect quite so much response to this.

So basically when I first started running Linux very recently, I tried out Mint 7 Main (Gnome) before anything else. Mint was my first ever Linux distro, and it COMPLETELY eased me in.

I loved the look and feel of the GUI, and while not quite understanding the terminal, I'm slowly picking up some basics and love the power behind it.

I went to try Kubuntu because I know Mint is originally derived from Ubuntu, and Kubuntu being the K "spin off" I figured I'd give it a shot. I enjoyed it and that's what led me to try out Mint 7 KDE CE.

Also loved it.

I haven't used ANY DE extensively enough to know what I prefer or what would suit my feel better at this time and I don't see myself making that decision any time soon, if ever. I enjoy both Gnome and the K desktop environment, for different reasons. Much like comparing two different cars, each has their pros and cons I guess.

I do know that I'm going to have to stick with Gloria's "Main" edition for the time being as my computer isn't really MY computer, it's a family computer, therefore I have to run Linux through Virtualbox installed on my iPod, which I use as a portable hard drive.

Eventually when I buy my own pc I might even consider dual booting the latest version of Mint in Gnome and KDE, or if possible (like I said, I'm fairly new to Linux), I'd like to be able to install both environments into the same install, and just choose which session I'd like to log into, much like other distros do. This will be a while until I can afford a pc, but can this be done in Mint?
