[SOL]Mint 13 Skype mic works only after rec. in another soft

Same thing with Skype 2 or 4 (64-bit). Skype recognizes Pulse audio as the device.Test call records silence, but after I record something in Audacity with Pulse audio as the rec. device, Skype also starts to understand the microphone! What gives? How can I skip this annoying trick to get Skype mic working?
The machine is HP dc7600.

One person told me he does not have Pulse audio, only ALSA yet Skype works for him just fine. Any ideas on what I should do?
This HP machine used to have Opensuse and it also required some mic toggling to get Skype working (Pulse audio).

Try running "pavucontrol" while using skype - check the Recording tab to see what it's doing. Any fixes done here *should* be automagically saved.

I didn't have pavucontrol so did "apt-get install pavucontrol"
But after trying to launch, I get this pop up:
Fatal Error: Unable to connect to PulseAudio: OK

In the terminal it says
(pavucontrol:2581): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_main_quit: assertion `main_loops != NULL' failed

Was trying to run pavucontrol as root. Really useful error message But now everything works, thanks Flemur.
