Default Desktop Icons & Root Account

Hello Minters,

I have the opportunity to convert someone from Windows-XP to Linux Mint. I have chosen to do a dual boot setup for them to ease the transition. After reformatting the drive, I installed XP on the C:drive (15gb), made a D:drive (10gb NTFS) for data to be shared between XP & Mint, E:drive (20gb NTFS) for Windows applications, 8gb / ext3 drive for Mint-4 KDE & a 39gb ext3 /home.

After installing Mint, the desktop does not have any default icons (home folder, trash can, drive shortcuts, etc...). How do I add these icons?

During the Mint install, I did not enable the root account but now I wish I did. How do I go about adding a root account and then I will remove it before I return the system?

you can run mintInstall and enable the root account.

What about default desktop icons? Is there a theme I need to enable or something? I don't remember this being an issue on numerous previous installs.

KDE mint has no default desktop icons.
you can add the rubbish bin to the panel as an applet.

to add all of the icons to the desktop you have to do it individually, right click on the desktop and click "create shortcut" and go from there. you can use mint assistant to enable the root account but i prefer to use the teminal, its so much quicker. from the terminal all you have to do is type:

sudo passwd root

and obviously enter the user password so you can run the command then enter the password that you want to use for root.

you can add a trash can to your desktop using this
from the wiki.

you can create a link on your desktop to your home folder by right clicking on the desktop,
selecting create new > link to location. then for the url add: /home/your user name/
then choose an icon.

for a link similar to "my computer", do the same thing but, for the url type: system:/media/
