-open Synaptic, search for and add "cairo-dock" (you may have to enable the universe & multiverse repositories)
-run cairo dock.
-this dock is configured very similar to Avant Window Manager, but there are fewer steps. It was the easiest of about 8 different docks I've tried.
EDIT: the new panel that you add is called "xbar". Then you add all the icons and whatever you want to it to make it your new taskbar.
