CD ROM detection issues

Postby prophet on Thu Apr 09, 2009 11:12 am

Hello!

Over the last week or so I have been trying many, many distributions to find one that I like and can "settle down" with.
This is *almost* the perfect distro for me, but I am having an issue that is rather a show stopper.

Once loaded (live from dvd or after installed on hdd), it simply does not recognize my dvd drives (I have 2 internal).
The drives work 100% fine, the discs are 100% fine. While the live dvd is booted, the file manager shows the Mint KDE DVD, but not the other drive.
Once I load to hdd and boot, neither DVD drive shows up. If I put in any disk, nothing happens.
I've tried to mount them manually etc, no luck.

This has not happened with any of the (numerous) other distros I've tried, including other flavors of Mint.
All of the others detect both drives and show them automagically.

Any ideas?

Your post is not quite easy to follow, but I read you as you have the KDE CE installed (Felicia?) and the DVD does not show up
This is a fairly uncommon problem, but it happens now and then
Please post your fstab
Code: Select all
cat /etc/fstab > fst.txt

will give you the content in a txt file in home

Hiya Husse!

Hope Easter is going well?

Anyway, just completed a fresh install of Felicia KDE, I can play dvd's, read a data cd, but when I put an audio cd in to play nothing happens, nada, zilch!!

Here's my fstab for you!

Cheers

Of course it would help, if I'd actually pasted it into my last post lol!!

Hi

Thanks for your great work on the new release everyone!

I have this problem too, but is fstab relevant, as audio cds don't get mounted? Data cds & dvds play fine.

I can browse the disc & see the audio files if I type audiocd:/ into Dolphin but I haven't managed to open any of the files yet. No notification happens when the drive spins up. I have to type eject into the terminal to get the disc out.

BTW Googling I have also discovered that Amarok 2 doesn't support audio cds at all. Gosh.

Cheers

Sorry if my original post wasn't clear.
What is happening is that CDs are not being detected/loaded at all.
I gave the other information simply trying to clarify that it was not in any way a hard ware or disc issue etc.

I have done extensive googling and found a couple of fixes.

First off, this seems to be a very common problem with KDE 4.2.
I had this same thing happen when I tried out the live disk version of SUSE with KDE 4.2.2 from kde.org

They say it is a bug in Dolphin not loading CDs/changes to the hal permissions?
I am by *no* means a linux guru and am sorry for the rambling. I'm just trying to provide some information I have gathered from numerous sites.
If you search for prhases like dolphin 4.2 cd not loading, etc you'll see what I mean.

The solution had to with permissions. I went to the user editor and altered my group memberships.
I added myself to cdrom and disk groups, at which point cds would work fine.

I cant even see my cd.....were ya find the group memberships at?
What I mean is,without a cd in the drive, there is no device connected, other than that it reads just fine.

There are too many with different problems in this topic
You change your group membership in "Users and groups" (surprise, surprise)
You have to unlock first to find it

You can find the User and Group Memberships settings two ways:

1. Hit ALT-F2 and type kuser, then click the KUser icon

2. Select "KUser User Manager" from the "System" kicker menu

Hope this helps. I have the same issue and I'm assuming you are using LM6 KDE....
