[Solved]Artifacts and screen corruption with Catalyst 9.7

Postby baskin on Sat Aug 08, 2009 6:22 am

I have just installed the Linux Mint 7 KDE Edition (I like Linux Mint and i'm a KDE fan!) and i'm experiencing artifacts and screen corruption with the latest fglrx driver (Catalyst 9.7) as you can see in the attached image.

Keep in mind that after default installation and before installing the Catalyst driver for my HD4670 (RV730XT) i had the same problem with the radeon open source driver (although without 3D).

My xorg.conf is:

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "aticonfig Layout"
Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Files"
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "DontZap" "False"
Option "Xinerama" "off"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0
Option "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
Option "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
Option "DPMS" "true"
Option "PreferredMode" "1680x1050"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
Driver "fglrx"
BusID "PCI:3:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0"
Device "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
Monitor "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Desktop Effects are working normally and I have no other issues so far.

Any hints;

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Your xorg.conf looks slightly odd
This is what I have
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "fglrx"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "DontZap" "False"
EndSection

That's all
Are the artifacts the dotted lines below trash and home
Any other?
If not I'd say it's something with that plasmoid

My xorg.conf has the necessary lines to force the flgrx driver to use 1680x1050 for my monitor (if i remove them it reverts to 1600x1200). I use the same xorg.conf on Linux Mint (with GNOME but x86_64) and two other distros with KDE without problem.

Artifacts also appear on the main menu and the panel (check the screenshot).

OK - sometimes people add a lot to let's say xorg.conf and they get a problem but you seem to have studied the subject.
It seems that the artifacts are on icons only - do you use the standard theme?
It can be the theme that for some reason has problems

You have partially right. I have switched to Oxygen icon theme and the artifacts have disappeared form the menu but i'm continuing to have them on the right section of the panel (mixer icon, klipper ...etc).

EDIT: A logout-login made the difference and now i don't have artifacts (until when????).

Strange problem!!!! :?

Yes - this can be very strange
I did not see the full extent of it at first - had I done that I'd immediately would have said theme :)
This is a combination of graphics card (hardware), graphics driver, the application* used, theme* and possibly more (software)
* They can be qt or gtk depending on DE and they have their problems
