editing file as root

In Mint KDE how do I edit a file as root?

I've tried:

davek-desktop davek # kwrite /etc/bash.bashrc
No protocol specified
kwrite: cannot connect to X server :0.0
davek-desktop davek #

what am I missing?

Launching graphical programs as root doesn't seem to work for me either (anyone know why?):

Code: Select all
lysias@ikutux ~ $ sudo -i
ikutux ~ # kate
No protocol specified
kate: cannot connect to X server :0
ikutux ~ # dolphin
<unknown program name>(3599)/: KUniqueApplication: Cannot find the D-Bus session server:  "/bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally with the following error: No protocol specified
Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.
"

<unknown program name>(3598)/: KUniqueApplication: Pipe closed unexpectedly.

But as said, kdesudo <program> should work just fine.
