Sound stopped working except for dragona and amarok

Postby twynsicle on Thu Mar 25, 2010 5:34 pm

Hi

I installed KDE helena and the sound was working fine in everything, i left the computer for a couple hours then tried to play something in Dragon. An error message came up in the bottom left something about something not working and reverting to something else. So i restart the computer and audio only works in Dragon and Amarok (also it makes the startup noise), however, its not working in songbird, xmms2, vlc, mplayer, movie player, opera or Firefox(flash or html5 <video>). I do a reinstall and exactly the same behavior occurs.

I've had a look at other topics where sound isn't working but they didn't help.

thanks in advance, Steven

Menu -> System Settings -> Multimedia . . . you should see different choices on the right, you can click, try/test, defer, prefer, . . . have this open when you try your players. At least this may narrow your search for a solution. :?

let us know how it goes . . richy :)

Hi, tried for flash (no sound) and dragon (sound) in both cases:
HDA NVidia (ALC883 Analog) worked when "tested"
HDA NVidia (ALC883 Digital) didn't work
HDA ATI HDMI, ATI HDMI (HDMI Audio Output) didn't work
PulseAudio displayed the error message .....falling back to HDA NVidia (ALC883 Analog) and worked

thanks, Steven

Okay, that's good, now try opening a terminal, and run sudo alsamixer, use the arrows to navigate, M to mute/unmute, up/down arrows for volume, Esc to quit . . :)

Another check is right-click the Speaker in the panel, and choose Show Mixer Window, there should be a Master and a PCM slider, try playin' with them . . :)
