problems installing kphotoalbum, KDE Julia

Postby fraxinus_63 on Fri Mar 18, 2011 1:28 pm

Dear friends,

Brand new install of KDE Julia; updated to KDE 4.6.1.

I attempt to install one of my 'workhorse' apps, kphotoalbum, using Synaptic - results in the following message.
Code: Select all
kphotoalbum:
Depends: libmarblewidget10 but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: khelpcenter  but it is not installable

I have tried some googling but I do not know how to resolve this - I am a bit of a newbie with anything Debian related, and also this is my first serious exploration of KDE 4. I see that I have libmarblewidget 11 installed already by default; Synaptic gives the option to install v.10 but attempting to do this I enter dependency hell with a request for marble-data.

Can anyone advise? Perhaps I need some other repositories enabled? I'd be grateful for any insights.

The problem your having is related to a bad package... libmarblewidget10 in the 4.6.1 upgrade it was 0bytes and broken thus its damaged and can not be installed...

See my post with the snap here:
viewtopic.php?f=109&t=67615

libmarblewidget11 and marble data 11 is installed on KMint.

Something has gone awry in the packaging possibly... that the marble thing was updated but KPhoto didn't update

The dependency issue is because its looking for 10 and they are gone from the repos and 11 has taken over.

rec9140 - that was a quick reply! Thank you.

Do you think this will be fixed by an update in the near future, or do you think we will be waiting some time? I have to ask as I am an artist with 15,000 digital photos on an NAS all catalogued using kphotoalbum!

Thanks again for your help.

Best to check with the developers of the software if they have a mailing list or forum... afraid I don't use it or even heard of it till today.

If you have not went too far into an install.. and are willing to start over you can try this:

Install the ISO....DO NOT UPGRADE ANYTHING... install KPhoto... it will install from the RC or Final release.... then update and see if it runs... or the upgrade which removes marble 10, which will probably break it...

NOTE: I've run it from the an install PRIOR to doing any updates... so it will run till mable gets changed to V11.

Kphotoalbum is not currently compatible with Mint 10 KDE. It depends on libmarblewidget10 which is also not compatible with Mint 10 KDE. That is why it was upgraded to libmarblewidget11.

So the problem is not a KDE issue. It is an issue with the developer(s) of Kphotoalbum since they have not upgraded their program.. Until they do you can't use the program. The developers have not upgraded since July 2009 so it is doubtful it will ever catch up with KDE 4.6.x A good alternative which is installed by default in KDE is DigiKam. I feel DigiKam is far superior to Kphotoalbum in that it has many more functions..

Thank you all for your advice.

This is extremely bad news for me as I have depended upon Kphotoalbum for some years. Actually, one of the things that I have always liked about it is its simplicity and "lack of features" - I just want something that will organise pics and help me find them, nothing more, and I have always found it very fast and dependable at that.

I shall see if digiKam is capable of importing Kphotoalbum databases.

If this is not practical I'll install LM10 Gnome and see if I can keep Kphotoalbum running there until I decide what to do.

Thanks again and best wishes!

If your willing to test something do this..

wipe your install...

REINSTALL the RC OR FINAL ISO

DO NOT DO ANY UPGRADES YET!

Install KPhotoAlbulm

On the updates that mintUpdate presents to you REMOVE

libmarblewidget10, and anything else that refers to libmarblewidget11 you will need to go through all 240+ updates and make sure you don't update any of the marble stuff. Make a list of the packages related to marble that you deselect/uncheck from the updates... later you will want to go into the mintUpdate preferences to set these to be ignored in the future so you don't get any unwelcome updates.

After all the updates see if it runs then...

KPhotoAlbulbm is a Qt program and its not likely to fair any better in a non Qt based DE as you mentioned, as you will need to have most of the Qt and KDE libs needed for KDE along with the marble stuff and I would image that the marble updates to 11 have been pushed to other variants as well.

Not updating and blocking any updates to marble seem to be about the only possible chance and option... but you will need to try it out. This will impact any program that uses marble libs and could cause them to fail on any future updates.

Thanks for your thoughtful suggestion. I had wondered if something like this might be possible - however, I am not sure this would be the way for me to go with a 'working' desktop. I depend on my photos to do my job, and the nagging fear that an update could break it all would not be good for my nerves.

I shall contact the Kphotoalbum devs. However I may take a look at other distros too - for example, I gather that Kphotoalbum does run on openSUSE using KDE 4.6.1. Perhaps it is a Kubuntu/Debian issue of some kind?

Once again, I'm grateful for your suggestions.

Thats why we block the potential for updates to the marble stuff in mintUpdate, it wont' offer it to you thus it won't get updated. You can also do something similar in apt-get/synaptic, but if you do it in mintUpdate theres no need to do it twice.

*buntuville switched to junk java versus the REAL java, well none of my java programs work on that junk JVM, so I make sure I've got anything related to it blocked, got burnt by it once, a quick unistall recovered things back to what is needed. I don't like dealing with tyrant larry any more than I have to but when it comes to Java there is no choice since the others are complete failures to be a 100% implementation.

Its a KPhotoAlbum issue in that they are depending on a specific version of the lib, and its been updated and replaced, so any KDE based distro which has updated to Marble 11 is not going to work, and since Marble11 is part of 4.6.1, if they've put that in their repo's 10 is gone.

Thanks for your interest and concern, and for explaining this. I have used RPM-based distros (SUSE, PCLinuxOS) for very many years, but I am new to the world of *buntu/Debian, and also to KDE4. I am keen to start learning.

EDIT: Interestingly, kphotoalbum seems to install quite sweetly on Linux Mint Julia Gnome edition (I have been playing around with a virtual copy) - but the dependency which it pulls in is still marble 10, not 11. I guess there is a risk that it would break when other KDE apps are upgraded and start bringing marble 11 with them.

Bad news... per the KPhoto people there is NO DEPENDENCY for KMarblewidget... so who ever is packaging this for *buntuville and thus KMint has done so incorrectly.

 Hi,
I believe there was an experimental branch with support for the Marble
widget, but it surely wasn't merged into trunk. The rating widget is
KRatingWidget, originally from Nepomuk, but it looks like it was merged
 into kdelibs.

rec9140, your packages are broken, and there's absolutely nothing we can do
here, sorry. The package version is "kphotoalbum
 4:4.6.1a-0ubuntu1~maverick1~ppa1", we're responsible for the
"kphotoalbum 4" part, so I'd suggest contacting your distributor and ask
who is responsible for the "4.6.1a-0ubuntu1~maverick1~ppa1" thing.

 Cheers,
 Jan

OK... something is not quite right with what the devs and the source actually does

I am working on the HOWTO as this will require a LOT of packages to compile from source that are not present on a fresh or even normal user install.

Once I hear from the devs I will advise further.

OK.... I have not got a clue what this program does :P :D

So I will leave to some one who does to give it a whirl....

OK this is the TESTING VERSION of the HOWTO V 0.01 , while its still fresh....

First we need to install a bunch of basic things to compile on Linux..

To start, open Konsole and:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`
sudo apt-get install cmake
sudo apt-get install kdelibs5-dev kdebase-workspace-dev

This should get the basic compiler stuff ready for you... next we need to get a bunch of stuff from Synaptic... I am choosing to use Synaptic here as I had to search for these packages and also to make sure we pull in the dependencies for some of these

So KMenu, synaptic

From there in the the search menu we need to get:

gettext (0.18.1.1-1ubuntu2)
libunistring0 (0.9.3-1)
texinfo (4.13a.dfsg.1-5ubuntu1)
libkipi-dev (4:4.6.1-0ubuntu1~maverick1~ppa2)
libkdcraw-dev (4:4.6.1-0ubuntu1~maverick1~ppa2)
libexiv2-dev (0.19-3)
libgexiv2-0 (0.2.0-0ubuntu2.1)
libgexiv2-dev (0.2.0-0ubuntu2.1)
pkg-config (0.25-1)
libjpeg62-dev

Right click on each to mark for installation.

This should mark all the packages this program needs.. .click apply at the top... it will tell you it needs to download some additional packages like libunistring-0 etc... accept those as well.

Go here:
http://www.kphotoalbum.org/index.php?pa ... oad-source

Download the 4.1.1 source to YOUR HOME DIRECTORY not your desktop not your documents but /home/<your_user>

Go back to konsole and:

Code: Select all
tar -xvf kphotoalbum-4.1.1.tar.bz2
cd kphotoalbum-4.1.1/
cmake .    <- Thats a DOT! ITS IMPORTANT! >
make -i
sudo make -i install

Its IMPORTANT to use make -i and sudo make -i install or you will not be able to get past the error I had above, this is per the devs. The packaged 4.1.1 source has an issue... if your set up for SVN you can get the SVN version which will not have this issue, but I am not setup for SVN on this system and neither are most others, so I chose to follow the path most would follow with the easiest available source.....

Each of these steps will spit out things... they must complete properly or you will not be able to use KPhoto...

cmake should give you something like:
Code: Select all
rec9140@rec9140-test-machine ~/kphotoalbum-4.1.1 $ cmake .
-- Found Qt-Version 4.7.0 (using /usr/bin/qmake)
-- Found X11: /usr/lib/libX11.so
-- Found KDE 4.6 include dir: /usr/include
-- Found KDE 4.6 library dir: /usr/lib
-- Found the KDE4 kconfig_compiler preprocessor: /usr/bin/kconfig_compiler
-- Found automoc4: /usr/bin/automoc4
-- Found Kipi library in cache: /usr/lib/libkipi.so
-- Found Kdcraw library in cache: /usr/lib/libkdcraw.so
-- Could NOT find marble  (missing:  MARBLE_INCLUDE_DIR MARBLE_LIBRARIES)
CMake Warning (dev) at CMakeLists.txt:341 (add_subdirectory):
  The source directory

    /home/rec9140/kphotoalbum-4.1.1/doc

does not contain a CMakeLists.txt file.

CMake does not support this case but it used to work accidentally and is
  being allowed for compatibility.

Policy CMP0014 is not set: Input directories must have CMakeLists.txt.  Run
"cmake --help-policy CMP0014" for policy details.  Use the cmake_policy
command to set the policy and suppress this warning.

-- Generating done
-- Build files have been written to: /home/rec9140/kphotoalbum-4.1.1
rec9140@rec9140-test-machine ~/kphotoalbum-4.1.1 $

IF you get the "Build files... " line then proceed to the make -i line

You WILL get some reported errors due to the issue with the documentation, but you should be able to do the last two lines and get something like:

Code: Select all
CMake Error at doc-translations/de_kphotoalbum/kphotoalbum/cmake_install.cmake:36 (FILE):
  file INSTALL cannot find
  "/home/rec9140/kphotoalbum-4.1.1/doc-translations/de_kphotoalbum/kphotoalbum/index.cache.bz2".
Call Stack (most recent call first):
  doc-translations/cmake_install.cmake:37 (INCLUDE)
  cmake_install.cmake:86 (INCLUDE)

rec9140@rec9140-test-machine ~/kphotoalbum-4.1.1 $ kphotoalbum

At end and then do a kphotoalbum to start it up...

So give this a whirl and if you encounter errors let me know... and I will advise what I overlooked in my notes... most likely packages that you need....

rec9140 - you are supplying advice and support far beyond the call of duty. Thank you very much indeed. As soon as I get a chance I'll take a spin and see how it goes.

I love this program because it is a simple and very reliable image archiving app. I know that digiKam is getting better and better (and is probably also stabler than when I tried it c. 2 years ago) - but if you want something that just tags tens of thousands of pictures, and finds them for you when you need them, it takes a lot of beating.

I guess I don't do things the way the rest of the planet does.. I don't tag photos but then I am not in it for a profession.....

Please give this a whirl and if it compiles please test it out so I can then report back what that its stable useable etc...

I can tell you that if (like me) your business involves sorting thousands of pictures of archaeological sites and monuments, then tagging is pretty useful. And one thing I like about Kphotoalbum is that it attaches tags to files without altering the original image files or metadata.

I'll give your suggestions a try at the weekend, when I next have time. Thanks again.

For any others following this... the notes on the IN PROGRESS HOWTO is based on a Julia 32b system.

Any one who would like to try the IN PROGRESS HOWTO on a 64b system let me know your results and I will see what I can do.
