[Solved] Linux Mint KDE 9 won't upgrade to ver. 10

Hello, I have Linux Mint KDE 9 and and can't get it to upgrade to version 10. I know with Ubuntu when a distribution upgrade came out, the update manager told you and asked to upgrade. I have not had this happen with LM KDE 9. Is there a command I have to run in to get the distro upgrade? Also, I've seen here in the forums that KDE 4.6.2 is out, when I up grade will I get that or will I get version 4.6.0? Thanks very much!

That's not generally how upgrades are handled in Mint. In Mint the recommended upgrade method is to backup your data and do a fresh install of the newer version. As far as what version of KDE you'll get I'm not sure I'll leave that question to someone else who knows as I don't use KDE.

KMint does not do in place upgrades. You will need to download the ISO and install from there.... BACKUP ALL DATA YOU WANT first! !

Once you do the install, you will get presented with the available updates, which will update you to the current 4.6.2 of KDE.

As advised by others backup all data and do a fresh install. This will install the KDE 4.6.0 DE but you will receive updates which will update to 4.6.2

Instead of doing the initial updates via update manager I would advise doing it in terminal with this command

Well thats very inconvenient. Does the Linux Mint 10 do inplace upgrades? I can understand the advantages of and new installation over an inplace upgrade, but I'm not going to do that every 6 months. Also, whats the easiest most compatible way to backup my data if I switch to Linux Mint 10 or to Ubuntu?

I prefer an external hard drive but a DVD data burn is also a good way to backup..

I have several external drives since I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 8-10,000 images..

Is there a way by using Synaptic or something to download all of the gnome stuff and do like a cross upgrade from KDE 9 to Gnome 10, or KDE 9 to Gnome 9 to Gnome 10? Also, does the normal Gnome version (not LMDE) of Linux Mint 10 support inplace upgrades?

Well, I did it! After lots of googling I installed some Gnome meta packages, a Mint Info Gnome package and a few other Gnome packages, then I uninstalled all of the KDE stuff, then added Julia's repo's and ran an update. 1,500 updated files later I was running Julia and everything was fine! Thanks Google!
