you can launch it from multimedia in tasty menu.

your fan problem is kernel/module related and out of our control/scope to fix.
you can add the virtual desktop applet to the taskbar yourself. I enable compiz and use my mouse wheel or touch pad to switch desktops.
The final will be a 1GB DVD but there will be a mini version that will be a CD. the release notes will mention what was removed to fit it on a CD. eg OOo, gimp, hugin, inkscape, wallpapers, doco, icon themes... anything big.
