kde not recognizing laptop's external volume wheel

I'm hoping someone might have gone through this exact issue and can help me.

The volume wheel on my laptop no longer works under mint kde --> seeing as it worked fine under Ubuntu but not under Kubuntu it must be something in kde right? I'm sure if it worked in one distro there must be a way to enable it here. Most of my reading online points me to Keyboard Layout or Keyboard Shortcuts in kcontrol but I'm not sure what to do in there.

Alternatively, I can live without the wheel as long as I can enable some keys as volume control shortcuts. It just plains sucks having to use the gui everytime to adjust the volume when watching a dvd.

I'm having the same problem with my Logitech mouse wheel. It just refuses to work in KDE 044. Any help would be appreciated as I'm a bit stuck with this one too.

Oh, I just noticed you mention you're running Kubuntu. Is your post in the right forum?
