Update errors in Virtual Box

Hi,
I'm running LM12 KDE editon in Virtual Box on a Mepis 11 machine. Both host and guest are 64-bit.
Whenver I attemt to do a software update, with the LM software/update manager, Synaptic, or apt-get, the following error is generated:

E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_oneiric_main_i18n_Translation-en
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Any help with this one appreciated.

Sorry if I'm unclear.
VirtualBox is part of my Mepis installation, installed from the Mepis repo's.
The host machine has no problems, and is running several other distro's in VirtualBox with no issues.
I am not attempting to update VirtualBox. Currently version 3.2.10.

I installed LM12 KDE in VirtualBox on my Mepis machine.

The errors ocurr when I attempt to open the LM software manager via the update icon in the panel, or synaptic in LM, or apt-get in LM.
The LM software manager times out and will not launch.
