Sound Issue with Skype/Pulse audio?

Postby brute on Thu Mar 05, 2009 5:20 pm

Hello, I really like Mint, in fact, all flavors of it. However, when using xfce, I cannot get the front mic to work in Skype. I have tried every adjustment there is. It works fine in the KDE version, granted I make a few adjustments and also in the Gnome version. Does anyone have a solution for this problem, or is it Pulse audio related? Is pulse the future for sound? I had zero problems with Alsa in earlier versions. :?

Maybe that is why it won't work. It seems the others I have tried had Pulse. I have tried every setting I can find including those in skype. Oh well, if anyone else has this issue and figure it out, please let me know.

KDE doesn't use pulse either.
You must ave it setup incorrectly.

I have the exact same problem! ... and I don't think it's a Skype setup issue.

I've been running Skype under Mint5 for quite a while. On the exact same h/w I installed Mint 6 XFCE on a different partition (and use the same /home partition for each). I'm setting up the new version to see if I like it and for the life of can't get Skype Audio to work either. The output works fine, the mic on my wired headset is not working.

I took screenshots of all the positions under Mint 5 that are set - a configuration that DOES work with Skype and the headset.

I logged into Mint 6 XFCE and set all the positions the same. I jimmied levels, tried other things, to no avail. I installed Audacity too because that works with the exact same settings on Mint 5. No luck there eaither.

So ... my test seems to indicate it isn't anything with Skype specifically ... both Audacity and Skype previously used ALSA HDA and worked fine.

Also, under both versions I can set up the USB web cam with built in mic to work fine too, it's just it's so crappy and full of echo that it's useless to use on Skype.

So where to look next - seems to be something about the way intel hda audio is handled maybe?

I give up on skype with XFCE and Mint KDE4.2 does use pulse as does Ubuntu, in fact, in Ubuntu, I actually had to have my sound out in Skype set to Pulse in order for it to work.
My problem basically was the mic on the front. No setting for XFCE would work, and yes, I believe you are right, it is not skype. Skype does work on earlier versions.

Do you have skype-static-oss installed?
Also you can't have skype set to pulse in XFCE if it's not installed.
