Loss of window desktop functionality

Postby milkfloat on Mon Nov 11, 2013 4:57 am

I appear to have lost much of my desktop functionality in XFCE. Open applications do not appear in the panel, I have no options for managing the window (for example, I cannot maximize or minimize windows, cannot switch between workspaces, cannot alt+tab to switch between open applications etc).

After restarts and log outs, the problem persists. I could see no options in the panel preferences that could change this. WIndow Manager will not launch from the settings menu.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Hi milkfloat,

....WIndow Manager will not launch from the settings menu.

This sounds similar to the xfce Window Manager problems encountered in this thread:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=113058

The solution there was to open a terminal, and enter:
Code: Select all
xfwm4

If you get a message that it is running, then try entering
Code: Select all
--replace xfwm4

If it works, go to Settings > Sessions and Startup > Sessions tab > click Save Session

You may also need to re-add Window Buttons to your panel items.

If doesn't fix, another suggestion - try xfce forum, an example:

Thanks caribriz, that seems to have fixed the problem. For future reference, do we know what causes this bug?

For any other readers trying to use this fix, the bug seemed to have disabled my return key in Terminal. Try using shift+return or ctrl+return worked.

I don't know, sorry - no expert here.
Just thought to suggest this as similar happened to me
It has been quite a common problem in the past, but there doesn't seem to be many new forum threads dealing with this problem lately :?

I too had this problem and the proposed solution only worked partially, I'm afraid. It was a new installation and I'd probably done far too much tweaking and not not enough rebooting in between, so probably my fault - it's only a machine after all. I had to to do a complete re-install :(
As I was down with the flu, I had the time. Everything looking good now, so fingers crossed...

System details:
Self-assembled 32-bit i3 machine, worked very well under the late SolusOS, from which I am a sad refugee:
Processor : 4x Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2130 CPU @ 3.40GHz
Memory : 2817MB (360MB used)
OS : Linux Mint Maya Xfce and no other.
