cinnamon (as i see it) has 2 advantages:
1- a sane interface (whatever this is, but it's valued by the users), ootb customization.
2- is cross-distro compatible: it's easily installable (without breaking anything) in ubuntu, fedora, arch, gentoo, opensuse, frugalwarehttp://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/?page_id=61
(and it's missing there now debian testing)
- basically, you get 5 pkgs and cinnamon runs in any gtk3 distro; that was never unity's situation this 2 years old attempt to port unity to fedora shows those difficulties
