Desktop Background image won't change (solved)

Postby DeepBlunder on Tue Jun 26, 2012 3:16 pm

When I right click on the desktop, I get a pop-up menu with the option "Change Desktop Background." When I select that option nothing happens.

When right click on an image in the file menus I get the option "Set as wallpaper" but again nothing happens.

Presently I am unable to change my desktop background image.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

i believe you should have this path:
menu > settings > settings manager > desktop
can you check?

Yes I do have that path and when used a window named Desktop opens.

When I select the Background tab and select a new image on the list, the desktop image still doesn't change. In fact, it is stuck on an image that doesn't even show up in the list on the Background tab. Previously when I clicked on an image from that tab it would have changed the desktop image right away.

Thanks very much.

ahh, so i believe that your problem is other: somehow you have nautilus handling the desktop.
nautilus got installed in lmde xfce as a dep, you really don't need it (you already have a file manager: thunar)
you can try this (will only perform a dry-run, if you are happy with the output remove the -s switch and do the real thing)
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get remove -s nautilus

Is this a LMDE-XFCE install?
or a
Mint (Ubuntu) install with a XFCE desktop installed over?
or a
'Regular' LMDE with XFCE installed on top?
or a
Earlier version (>9) of Mint xfce?

Inquiring minds like to know :)

Edit AW beat me to it thought 'Nautilus strikes again' ALSO

Yes I surmised is LMDE

The first thing I advise on a LMDE64 (XFCE) install is to uninstall nautilus (causes quite a few problems). OR install "Swift linux (LMDE based) and install XFCE and XFCE-Goodies and use a MDM session also, If a 32bit.
Only thing I'm aware will effect for most people is no burner (brasero) that you can install xfburn (no nautilus dependency)

P.S. The XFCE spin (Maya base) was abroved for RC :D

J.Jay This is a LMDE-XFCE install.

if you want to go deeper in this problem (nautilus in lmde-xfce) open a terminal and post the output of
Code: Select all
 dpkg --get-selections | grep nautilus
this will tell us the nautilus dep that you still have in your system. not all of then will be easy to remove but can be done (and this way you won't have again nautilus knocking at your door)

in my lmde-xfce running in vb
Code: Select all
zerozero@xfce-vb ~ $ dpkg --get-selections | grep nautilus
libnautilus-extension1            deinstall
