Slow to Log out

Recently installed Maya Xfce. Very fast. However there is one puzzle. When I log out the normal way, by which I mean Menu --> Log Out --> Shutdown, the desktop just sits there for about 60 secs and then suddenly changes to a blank screen, then a couple of lines of text appear, but before I can read them everything finally shuts down.

On a couple of occasions when I have logged out the machine shuts down in about 2 seconds as expected. This is the only thing that runs slowly, everything else is unbelievably fast.

Has anyone else had this please? Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
