Hello,

I'm not sure what has happened, VLC was playing videos fine yesterday and today I get no video but VLC is playing the file, so I purged/reinstalled and got this message:
sudo apt-get install vlc
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
vlc : Depends: fonts-freefont-ttf but it is not installable
Depends: vlc-nox (= 1:2.0.4-dmo2) but 2.0.3-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 is to be installed
Depends: libavcodec54 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libxcb-keysyms1 (>= 0.3.9) but 0.3.8-1build1 is to be installed
Recommends: vlc-plugin-notify (= 1:2.0.4-dmo2) but 2.0.3-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 is to be installed
Recommends: vlc-plugin-pulse (= 1:2.0.4-dmo2) but 2.0.3-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
How do I correct this?
Linux Mint 13 64-bit , Xfce 4.1

that is something that you have to tell us, for example why did you mixed debian and ubuntu sources.list together?
give us the output of

Code: Select all

inxi -Sr

this is not looking good at all
unless this is an experiment install where you want to "play" and see how fast/when/ you break it, this install is broken afaik.

are absolutely incompatible you can't at any rate use debian repos in a ubuntu-based system [or the other way around]

save all your personal data and reinstall.

Yeah, I like to play.

Aww, man, There is no way to get iceweasel on Linux Mint 13, even if I BELIEVE enough?

ahh iceweasel :?:
i found this >> http://namakutux.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07 ... -1204.html
you have to use that just as a guide because the version now available is different and the links there provided are dead
- install the dependency libnspr4-0d from the ubuntu repo
- search in http://packages.debian.org/search?suite ... =iceweasel the iceweasel version you want (i believe that 17 would be a lot more difficult to get installed but 10.0.11esr-1 should be fine)
- search also the corresponding xulrunner and libmozjs
- follow the rest of the guide (the 2 installation commands)
- believe a lot

all this is just theory  there's a high possibility that it just won't work.

On Ubuntu follow these steps

Open software center.

From edit click on software source

Under Ubuntu Software tab, enable all the repositories except source code and click on download from

Select other from download drop down

Now click on select best server

Once Ubuntu select best server for you click on chose server

Now click on other software tab.

Remove any entry if you found for VLC. And click on close.

Press ALT + CTRL+T key combination to open the terminal and run following command

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
After upgrading reboot the system.

After reboot try again to install VLC. Run following commands
