Xfce Linux Mint 14 32 bit : Hangs on boot /Black screen

Post by sakthivivek »

I get a black screen just after selecting the OS in the grub bootloader. If I select the generic boot mode, The screen displays till "Loading Initial RAM disks" then it hangs.

I have been using it for about a week. I performed regular updates, installed a few packages. Then all of a sudden this happened.

I am a newbie, Pls help me out

Thank you in advance

Hello sakthivivek and welcome to the Linux Mint Forums,

What I believe you may be running into is a graphic problem that's fairly common with the newer kernels.
you can try using the nomodeset parameter and see if that will clear the problem for you.

here are a couple pages that will tell you why and how.

hope these are of help.

Thank you for the quick reply. But I couldnot fix the problem.

I tried out the "nomodeset" ,"nvidia.nomodeset=0" and "nouveau.modeset=0", it didnot fix the problem. Then I tried deleting the "quiet splash", which was in vain. Some of the users advised me to change the GRUB resolution using "GRUB_GFXMODE", again did not solve the problem. I also came across people having boot problems due to thier Wireless drivers, so I also tried blacklisting "b43" [which I hope we can perform in grub].

I also noticed that the system doesnot exactly HANG because I could still reboot using Ctrl+Alt+Del [Just trying to give as much details as possible :) ]

Do have any suggestions on the matter ?
