I've been using Xubuntu 13.10 recently and it's working very well, but I can't help looking forward to LM 16 Xfce. :D

Can somebody tell me if Linux Mint 16 Mate / Cinammon + Xfce installation = Linux Mint 16 Xfce edition or there are some special features and it's better to wait for LM 16 XFCE edition ISO ?

With LM16 Xfce, you get better integration of the Xfce desktop with Mint and Mint Menu than you can by adding the desktop later, at least AFAIK, in comparison to older releases of LM Xfce.

You can now find the XFCE Release Candidate from the mirrors.

I've tried both lately, and I'd consider doing it the other way. Compared to Cinnamon 16, Xfce 16 is more stable - I found several problems with the Cinnamon FINAL interface and only one (screensavers) with Xfce RC. Seems like a more mature product (Xfce 14's been my main man since it came out).

That makes sense, as Cinnamon is a lot more complicated than the intentionally scaled-down XFCE.

I've been using Mint XFCE 16 RC for a couple of weeks, and it works great. (There were some problems resuming from Hibernation, but those seem to have gone away now.) The only odd thing I notice is that it shows the Ubuntu 10.3 startup screen---was that intentional, I wonder?

I downloaded LM-Xfce-16-64 today and used the USB key utility in 15 to make the bootable key. It loaded and booted fine. As with the prior distro, I had to play with the display manager to get it to display 1280x 1024 on this Atom D2700 with GMA3650. For some reason, it wants to be a laptop and to have my Viewsonics 17" as a dual display so I have to disable the laptop screen so it all looks nice. The panel action-button "suspend" works fine without tweaking...earlier version I had to add myself to the group "users" to get it to work.

I use the xfce edition on all my machines, regardless of hardware, by preference...like the clean simplicity of the original xfce menu and depend on the right-click to bring up the menu. It is hard for me to think of how this distro could be improved for my needs, outside of a few additions to the software, but that is what synaptic is for.

As far as my distro-hopping has taken me, Mint (and I have not tried all the editions) is the only current distro that works well with this Intel mobo/graphics combo. I am going to standardize all my hardware on it for ease of maintenance. Congratulations to the Dev Team for a magnificent job!

Later

On installing it to the SSD on the above box, I discovered that there was no "gparted" partition manager to be found. I had encountered some difficultly with the partitioner in the Mint installer and had to resort to "cfdisk" to get it fixed. I am sure there are good reasons (can't be .iso size at 1.2G) why it was omitted but This is the first live disk I have encountered from the early days of knoppix that lacked gparted or its equivalent. Sorry Devs, the partitioner in the installer just does not make it as a replacement.

@wh7qq: The Mint 16 Mate Live DVD included gparted. I wonder if the 'USB-installer' wiped gparted from the installation. I know that a normal installation on a hard drive strips gparted from the installation.
