Problem burning Linux Mint 6 XFCE release CD

Postby ianjb on Tue Mar 03, 2009 7:47 am

I’ve installed Linux Mint on 2 machines and I love it! Excellent work.

I’m having a problem with the Linux Mint 6 XFCE release. I downloaded the ISO and did a checksum on the download.

ASUS VBOXshared # md5sum LinuxMint-6-XFCE.iso
9af0b708d9489867de77bbebbbade689 LinuxMint-6-XFCE.iso

All good so far. I then tried to burn the iso to cd not once but four times. I got errors 3 times from Brasero. I then tried to burn it with Xfburn which doesn’t do a verify so I did an md5sum on the contents of the cd against md5sum.txt on the disk and got 3 files with md5 errors.

Confused, I mounted the ISO file:

ASUS mnt # mount -o loop /home/ian/VBOXshared/LinuxMint-6-XFCE.iso /mnt/disk
ASUS mnt # cd /mnt/disk

and did the md5sum against the mounted ISO and also got errors. Here is the output:

ASUS disk # md5sum -c md5sum.txt
./drivers/broadcom-b43xx/broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0.tar.bz2: OK
./drivers/broadcom-b43xx/b43-fwcutter_011-1_i386.deb: OK

I’m wondering if anyone else has had trouble burning the cd?

ianjb,

Unusual... I think if it were me I would re-do the download, preferably from a different mirror. And see what happens then.

This problem is similar to the one I had. However, when I do the following command I get a correct checksum for the disk even though the disk burning program ( in my case k3b) indicates an error.in the burn. Mount the cd in the drive.

dd if=/dev/cdrom | md5sum

Also the size is indicated to be 728 instead of 694 MB.

I have done three installs without any problem so long as I do not press "skip" when the install is near completion and wants to go online. I use static ip settings so just let it time out.

OK, I'm relatively new to Mint and Linux in general so there is a good chance that I'm doing something wrong ...

I downloaded the iso from another location on another computer (winXP). I used the WinMd5Sum to check the iso and and got the correct MD5. I used HP RecordNow to burn the CD with no errors. The CD appears to work just fine as a liveCD.

I went back to the iso and mounted it inside a VirtualBox Ubuntu 8.10. I repeated the md5 check on the files on the cd:

ian@ian-virtual-desktop:/cdrom$ md5sum -c md5sum.txt
./drivers/broadcom-b43xx/broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0.tar.bz2: OK
./drivers/broadcom-b43xx/b43-fwcutter_011-1_i386.deb: OK
./drivers/broadcom-b43xx/wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o: OK
./drivers/mintWifi.README: OK
./.disc_id: OK
./md5sum.txt: FAILED
./README.diskdefines: OK
./casper/filesystem.squashfs: OK
./casper/initrd.gz: OK
./casper/filesystem.manifest-desktop: FAILED
./casper/vmlinuz: OK
./casper/filesystem.manifest: OK
./mint4win.exe: OK
./isolinux/isolinux.cfg: OK
./isolinux/mt86plus: OK
./isolinux/isolinux.bin: OK
./isolinux/boot.cat: FAILED
./isolinux/splash.jpg: OK
./isolinux/vesamenu.c32: OK
./autorun.inf: OK
./lmmenu.exe: OK
./.disk/casper-uuid-generic: OK
./.disk/info: OK
./.disk/release_notes_url: OK
./preseed/cli.seed: OK
./preseed/mint.seed: OK
./preseed/ltsp.seed: OK
md5sum: WARNING: 3 of 27 computed checksums did NOT match
ian@ian-virtual-desktop:/cdrom$ md5dum -c md5sum.txt

The same 3 files failed that failed in the first post in this thread:

I then checked a couple of files that passed the test:

ian@ian-virtual-desktop:/cdrom$ md5sum README.diskdefines
2d505046ca375d2d72465b28f7012777 README.diskdefines
ian@ian-virtual-desktop:/cdrom/casper$ md5sum filesystem.squashfs
a13e69c9e474b49d2030da49234318dd filesystem.squashfs

and these matched the MD5s in md5sum.txt

2d505046ca375d2d72465b28f7012777 ./README.diskdefines
a13e69c9e474b49d2030da49234318dd ./casper/filesystem.squashfs

I then checked the 3 files that failed:

ian@ian-virtual-desktop:/cdrom$ md5sum md5sum.txt
053402e827cd093a8840232d4981b7d4 md5sum.txt
ian@ian-virtual-desktop:/cdrom/casper$ md5sum filesystem.manifest-desktop
cd9c0a5e5bd2d4f592c4338599ab7f9f filesystem.manifest-desktop
ian@ian-virtual-desktop:/cdrom/isolinux$ md5sum boot.cat
184040516e41b4ecc95e699d4e1a9843 boot.cat

And sure enough they are different from what is in the md5sum.txt

d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e ./md5sum.txt
77fff8738b0c91cc04c2b927271ddbf3 ./casper/filesystem.manifest-desktop
5e3163a14886233ea1394dd175fef436 ./isolinux/boot.cat

If I'm using md5sum correctly, then my guess is that the md5 for the iso matches what is in the iso and that all of the files in the iso are good except for the md5sum.txt file.

Also if Brasero checks the md5's of the files burned to the disk with the md5sum.txt file that would explain why Brasero fails saying some files on the cd may be corrupt.

Quick update. I installed Mint from one of the failed Brasero CDs (see first post in the thread). The installation was clean and everything that I have used is working.

It seems to be not recognizing the CD media properly and giving checksum errors I believe....I just burnt an ISO with Xfburn and it went fine. I didn't keep the error log as I got frustrated and removed it all. :D I'm used to K3b but don't want all those libraries right now.

I have a similar / related Xfce problem...

I tried to make a boot Linux DVD (no CDs available now, so I know it's a waste). I checked the BIOS and this USB DVD drive just won't boot the disks I made. I checked the BIOS of 3 computers and they are all set to allow a ROM drive to boot. NONE of them boot from two DVDs I made with two different ISO writers. This is weird...

Does anyone have any ideas about why the ROM drive is shown as (not present) in the one BIOS?
It's telling me the BIOS can't even see the drive! But I can use it normally. Weird...
I'll have to see if the other two BIOSes show it or not.

The ISO is the right files size, plus I did an MD5 checksum on it.
It should be OK.

P.S. my first post, so I hope I described everything properly

I'm having the same MD5 errors on burned DVDs of Mint 6 XFCE edition (standard Mint 6 edition is fine).

./md5sum.txt: FAILED
./casper/filesystem.manifest-desktop: FAILED
./isolinux/boot.cat: FAILED

Checksum of the downloaded ISO is OK. The problem seems to be after burning. Tried two times with the exact same problematic results.
Medias were burned on Windows Vista using ImgBurn.

Anyway, I ran the supposedly corrupted XFCE edition in LiveCD mode (without installing in the HD) on a laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-N250E) and everything seemed to be OK. Wireless working, sound ok, touchpad ok, firefox watching youtube videos ok, tested some utilities and everything seemed to be fine. I just couldn't mount the NTFS drive.

Question for the gurus: What is this file "./casper/filesystem.manifest-desktop"? And what problems could it give being with a wrong MD5 checksum?
(The other two files I have an idea of how they work)
:)

filesystem.manifest-desktop has the info on what is to be installed.
Most likely the md5sum of filesystem.manifest-desktop in md5sums.txt is wrong, it may work fine for a install.

Brasero is known to have these errors, I have reverted to Xfburn since a month or two, works like a charm! :D
