I'm sure this is known because it's so obvious, but I searched and didn't find any mention...

Linux Mint 7 XFCE CE
The symptom: when logging in the desktop (background & icons) never appears, but everything else does. I tracked down an error message in .xsession-errors.

Sorry, this is going to be a bit imprecise because I'm going from memory.
Relevant lines from /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc:

36:   source $SOMETHING

The "source" fails with command not found because it is not a /bin/sh built-in like it is for /bin/bash. "." would be the traditional bourne shell command for including other scripts. Or change the shell to bash. (Or "alias source=.".)

If someone could point to earlier reports of this bug I might be able to improve my search skill.

It would be easier to help you with all the code. Highlight all the code with your mouse, open a response box in this thread and then paste the code in with a middle mouse click.
