Mic doesn't work in skype

Postby maiqiang on Mon May 30, 2011 12:35 am

Recently installed xfce and i'm still trying to find my way around. I've installed skype. After some fiddling around, and help from the forum, I got the webcam working, but I still am not able to hear myself. The mic is part of the webcam, which is a kinstone. I used to use Ubuntu and when I had this problem there I would go to System>Sound and change the input device to the webcam mic. But I don't see how to do this in xfce.

Thanks for any help.

Check whether you have "gstreamer0.10-gconf" installed as I think Mint Update misses it out, check if sound recorder works.
I also created a launcher with "gnome-volume-control" as the command which gives you the Pulse volume controls and also another launcher with "pavucontrol" as the command.

You may need to check that PulseAudio has the microphone set as the fallback source, rather than the monitor of the output! You do this in PulseAudio Volume Control as described in :-

Before you deal w/ the mic on skype, see if the mic work w/ arecord/aplay (you have them). i.e., on a terminal do

arecord -d 5 test.wav # say "testing 1 2 3"
aplay test.wav # you should hear yourself

This narrows the problem to either your mic or skype.
