LMDE BREAKAGES - tracking TESTING

Post by zerozero »

debian wheezy is expected to be released as the next debian 7 next weekend (4th/5th may http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-an ... 00006.html)
====
this means (for us tracking directly testing) that we will see again the awakening of Testing (this time with codename Jessie) in the day(s) immediately after.
====
this topic (more than 2 years long) fulfilled its purpose and will be locked then. it's better (with Jessie's cycle) to start afresh; the new topic is here >>

Update 16 Mar 2011- LibreOffice came in today's updates, it will ask you to remove part of OpenOffice (even if in the same process other part of OO will be updated -the process is not so clean as in sid, where the change was made in one move).
Depending on the customizations you made on your system the change should be smooth, ending with a full replacement of OO with LO, if for some some reason that doesn't happen there's a new metapackage called libreoffice that should take care of it.

Update 4 Mar 2011- The vlc/libva1 issue is solved. If you pinned/unmarked libva1 from update, can now proceed safely; if you chose to remove vlc, look in synaptic for the new vlc 1.1.7 and install it; if you didn't update your system at all in these days can now do it.

## SOME RANDOM IDEAS ##

And for the ones that come here looking for help, remember a few things:
1- LMDE is based in debian testing (wheezy), so it's not by definition a stable, rock-solid, trouble-free system, as it was said in the blog several times
Things are likely to break more often but fixes can also come quicker. For this reason, LMDE requires a deeper knowledge and experience with Linux, dpkg and APT.
We have to understand that it's here that debian tests the next stable release, so issues can happen, but they are often solved quicker than in the *buntu versions

2- it's not a good idea, just because something broke or a pkg was removed during an upgrade, to pull new pkgs from sid or squeeze (we are confusing the system) and future updates may not come as smooth as they should;
This Debian tool http://release.debian.org/migration/ can give us an idea why a certain pkg/version is not in testing/LMDE

3- MintUpdate is not designed for LMDE yet; if you want a safe experience during updates, please use synaptic or the terminal.

although MU has been probably the Mint tool with more versions and code revisions in the last weeks, and overall it's a lot better than it was in september, we see below that even Clem admits that until the monthly snapshots arrive, the best and safe way to update LMDE will be the use of apt:
clem wrote:Well, the rationale is different for Ubuntu and Debian Testing.

On Ubuntu, it's about filtering per level to prevent novice users from upgrading sensitive parts of their system. On Debian Testing, since it's rolling, it's about skipping temporary issues until they get resolved... so it's not a matter of filtering per level, but snapshoting the flow of updates and releasing it when it's stable.

With this in mind, mintupdate in its current form is still very much designed for an Ubuntu base. You can enable all 5 levels in it and get the same level of functionality as with apt itself, but what's really needed is a snapshot repository of Debian Testing and a fork of mintupdate designed specifically for LMDE. This will be designed and released after Mint 11.
The terminal it's the fastest and easiest way, just open it and do

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
now watch the output, sometimes, something is broken (it's testing remember :D ), if you see something odd, apt wanting to remove half of your installation (can happen), don't panic 8) answer n and wait for a better day to update, it will come soon

Well done zerozero.

People power - I like it :D

Now all we have to do is to persuade someone to make this thread sticky.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first

also it might be wise if we encouraged people to update using the command line and checking to see if anything is being removed BEFORE they apply the updates. Because it's quite easy that way to see these things and not let anything break in the first place by just updateing those packages that don't remove anything.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first

I agree with you 100% gotjazz, but I would like to respectfully suggest that we try and restrict this thread to what zerozero intended it for, that is LMDE Breakages (I would prefer to call it Update Warnings, because LMDE doesn't break, not if you treat it right :) ) The trouble is that if we start having debates here about what is the best way to manage LMDE then the thread will become overly long and therefore unusable for the purpose for which it was intended. I realise that I am (to date) the most guilty of the forum members in abusing this principle, but I would really like to stop that right now and not post anything more in this forum unless it relates to problems with LMDE updates.

This thread is essential to the maintenance of LMDE and in the (inexplicable) absence of an "official" response to the problem, this thread is all we have, so let us look after it.

Please do not interpret this as any form of criticism it is not meant to be that in any way.

Once a breakage is reported, are we to update this thread once it is resolved?

If so, VLC is fixed.

Downloaded several updated support packages and then reinstalled VLC.

Absolutely!

I was just about to do it myself but you beat me to it. To reiterate, if you have 'pinned' libva1 then unpin it and upgrade and all will be well again, including a new VLC.

About 9 days since it went wrong by my estimation - that is slow by debian standards so obviously it was quite a big 'break', normally things get fixed much faster than that.

I was thinking about possibly re-installing LMDE (had taken it off after the broken package issue with vlc caused problems)....Did they also send down the new version of VLC as well? Also, if i were to install LMDE and do all the updates that would be waiting, would it now go ok or would i need to uninstall vlc before doing the updates or hold something back in the updates?
Thanks... :wink:

I can only say that uninstalling LMDE because of a media player problem was a BIG mistake. However if that is what you have done and you now want it back then I guess that reinstalling is your only choice. Trouble is with that is that you will have literally hundreds and hundreds of updates to install and bunging all that lot into one massive update may well cause problems, but they really are of your own making as I hope you are able to see now. What choice do you have? You might wait until Clem produces an updated LMDE install disk, most rolling release distros do this, but I have no way of knowing if MInt intend to follow suit or when such a disk may be available. Your only other alternative is a complete reinstall from the original disk, and if that is the way you decide to go then it won't matter what you do with vlc because your partition will be overwritten anyway and you ask, did they 'send down a new vlc? - yes of course, that will be installed along with all the other updates the first time you update - and please use the package manager or command line for this not the update manager.

So did I, and about 3 hours before you. Trouble is you posted it in the wrong place. That is what this thread is for. If anybody has any similar problems in the future please do what it says in the title and -read here first- before posting. In fact - read here first- before updating and that way you will learn if anybody else has experienced difficulties with the latest set of LMDE updates. If they have you may well be better refraining from updating until somebody suggests what the solution is. That is why this thread is so very important to LMDE users - READ HERE FIRST -please?

And whilst I am on the subject thank you to zerozero for updating the thread title, in the absence of a proper sticky thread I hope you are able to keep that up.

thanks guys...to viking777...yeah i know...it was dumb...i should have just waited for the fix to come down and use a different player while waiting for it...a friend of mine said that same thing...I'll give it a shot and hope the 500 plus updates will go ok...I'm sure Clem will do a revised disc but of course we don't know exactly when it will come out...I guess i will give it a shot and if things don't work out i will wait for his new disc and in the meanwhile go back to main edition again...

I tried to do the right thing yesterday about VLC ....but it was hard to recall which posting to reply to.....there were <how many> posts from last week on vlc, libva1, broken packages, etc....? Just to name some of them...

I'd start with the 2011 respin for a reload...and then after all 500+ updates and personal tweaks...it's CLONEZILLA TIME...

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - read here first - Update 4 mar 2011

Post by craig10x »

Well, i did re-install LMDE today and when it came to the updates there was 605 of them...initially (after enabling levels 4 and 5) i tried doing them with the Update Manager but it conked out about 3/4 of the way through...I was able to "save myself" by doing the upgrades through the terminal...then it installed everything without a hitch :D
I breathed a "sigh of relief" :lol:

I guess from now on i will do it that way, but i hope eventually, Clem and the team will be able to update the manager to work more smoothly with the updates (tailor it for LMDE)....By the way, the new VLC installed with no problem and i got no broken packages messages...so the "fix" worked...
I think it was a great idea to make this thread to post for any future breakage...

The footnote warnings/advice should be in red.

Got the LibreOffice update plus couple of others today, but MintUpdate only gave me "broken packages" before exiting.

I fired up Synaptic, selected LibreOffice (metapackage) for installing and it did the job. If it hadn't been able to do it, at least it would have given some information on what was broken.

Closed Synaptic and let the MintUpdate tool try and finish installing the rest of the packages, which it did.

Thanks for the running updates, zerozero!

One thing I found out about this upgrade you mention is that it left most of the OpenOffice directories and files. I had to run the following to get rid of them:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get --purge remove openoffice
One other thing I noticed is that the upgrade removed the spell checking dictionary that's required for OpenOffice/LibreOffice from LMDE as well so spell checking in Writer and the other LO programs no longer works. I fixed that by installing the correct (locale) "MySpell" dictionary from Synaptic and that solved that problem. Just FYI

Thanks for the heads up on that. Installed MySpell and everything seems just fine now. One odd thing though - i ran:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get --purge remove openoffice
and got:
E: Unable to locate package openoffice
Does that mean Openoffice was already purged from my system? I had previously done a:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Which removed Openoffice and replaced it with Libreoffice.

Thanks

Yup, that means OO is already purged although in my system it wasn't after yesterday's upgrade. If there is something to purge it will just do it and usually won't tell you anything. Informative isn't it? :D

Oh, by the way, in that line:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
The "sudo apt-get upgrade" isn't necessary. It's a different type of upgrade from "dist-upgrade" You either run one or the other. "apt-get upgrade" will only update your existing packages while "apt-get dist-upgrade" will update your existing packages, remove obsolete packages and install new available packages as well. You can get breakages either way since new packages might be required as dependencies for upgraded packages in the case of "sudo apt-get upgrade" so using "apt-get dist-upgrade" is still the best way so far.

Note: This only applies to LMDE since LMDE is a true rolling release. For any other flavor of Mint you'd use MintUpdate levels 1, 2 and 3 all the way. Perhaps someday Clem and Co. will figure out how to tailor MintUpdate so it works properly in LMDE but considering the rolling aspect of LMDE, I'm at a loss as to how theyn would do that. :)

So, just to clarify...when doing the updates, all that is necessary to type into the terminal is this:
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Is that correct?
