amazing amazing

Postby Guest on Sat Jan 10, 2009 9:12 pm

I hope this isn't the wrong topic, but I have to express my gratitude and my deep surprise with the latest linux mint fluxbox edition. I've tried several distros so far, but never everything (and really everything) worked that perfectly!
I've connected a fake external cd-drive (usb-ide hub from a broken external hdd with an old cddrive) to my old ibm x21 and the bootup and installation worked flawlessly. Later, I've realised that networking, internet and all the other stuff simply are amazing!
Then, the big final test: there is a xfce option, whichs lets music media start automatically (sorry for my bad english). Will linux mint discover my audio cd, which enters the fake external drive? It did without problems and given the fact how many problems base on the combination between ibm subnotebooks, windows and external drives this is maybe one of the nicest signs for the whole community!
if you are facing problems with ibm x series and bootup,... just let me know, I'll do my best!
regards and greetings, michael

It's nice to see positive feedback! Shane did a lot of hard work on the Fluxbox Edition.

Yes, I have to concur that Elyssa is quite impressive. I have been using Cassandra in the fluxbox config for a year and grew into that distribution. Fluxbox is rock stable ,and a good choice for marginal hardware, but is so simple it's sick. This current version has all the hardware integration of the previous 3.0, and so far everything works.

The install was really ok, except once or twice, the screen went asleep, and it was like reviving Lazarus to get that desktop back! They don't have a screensaver in LiveCD mode, do they?

Yes, Thank You Shane! Thank You Comunity!

Happy Mint Fluxbox CE user since two days!

I installed it on my older Laptop
Intel Celeron 1.6 GHz
512 MB RAM
Previously equipped with XP, which was becoming rather slow and less responsive with many apps on it although I had tweaked the shit out of it.

I am new to Linux and I was looking for a balance between speed and usability (read: noob-friendly) to make my Laptop work again. At least I wanted to be able to run OpenOffice and Firefox at the same time without system almost collapsing.

So I tried several Distros the last two days:
*Projekt Neptune - came close, maybe a bit speedier (debian base not ubuntu), not as idiot-proof as mint, didn´t feel as mature but I liked it too
*Antix - bit too basic for my tastes, but flies
*Zenwalk - tested only live system, reviews held me back for some reason I can´t remember
*#! Crunchbang - first one I tried, very nice but honestly not for a beginner like me.
*Puppy - wow fast but touchpad tap did not work and i didn´t want spend too much time googling and editing x.org

Mint Fluxbox CE perfectly fit my needs and my taste!

Wow! Booting and Shutting Down much faster, Menu and applist in the menu show up instantly (XP:Menü-->Programs-->computer begins sweating from listing all apps) and even Software installation with Browsing and Terminal open is no problem. I love it. I hoped to make my Laptop somewhat usable with FF3 and OOo3 for research and writing but with Mint I now have a fast, responsive and visually beautiful system.

I also like of course the amount of help and Information You find on the forums (Mint/Ubuntu). So it doesn´t scare a noob like me firing up a terminal and manually installing packages or editing configs (although sometimes I wonder why there is no *simple* gui for some configs). Works out of the box.

Compaq Prosignia 150 laptop. 350 Mhz processor, 160MB RAM, 4GB HD
10 years old. Unknown mileage. Runs.

Sounds kinda like an ad in the classifieds for some old jalopy, right? Well, if it weren't for LM6 FCE, it wouldn't even say that last bit (sorry Puppy Linux. I love you, but auto-configuration is what is missing from our relationship  ).

Thanks to Shane and all who contributed to this brilliant distro!!

Amazing doesn't even begin to describe it.

Anyone who has used Linux, and it left a bad taste in their mouth, needs a Mint.

Cheers.

That's a great line deBebbler 8)

You should make it part of your signature!

Done and done. :D

Nice signature yourself. That's my favorite Blind Melon tune.

I heard that LIFE had dealt Shane a hand that is gonna keep him from continuing the Fluxbox Editions. Just wanted to say thanks to you once more, Shane. Good Luck to you.

...and I hope some benevolent soul picks up the Fluxbox torch and runs with it . . . please.
