I installed Open Office from Synaptecs standard repository but the menu fonts are huge. Am I using the right installer?

Is it just the menu fonts?
And yes that's the right place - where else except the software portal? (There are other locations, but first these two)

The problem here is how Open Office handles which GTK theme it uses is not exactly how Gnome or XFCE does. Have a look here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3109273 This should hopefully solve your problem.
