can't ge camera running in LM Fluxbox

Postby shengchieh on Fri Jun 25, 2010 2:01 pm

I'm trying get the camera to work on Linux Mint 8 Fluxbox.
I have 2 cameras - both are plug-n-play. When I brought them,
I noticed they work with Ubuntu (in the consumers reviews).

After plugging a USB camera and running cheese (simple
self imaging program), I get

$ cheese &
[1] 7625
$
(cheese:7625): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme directory scalable/stock of theme Minty has no size field

I get the same error for the other camera.

Am I missing a component in LM Fluxbox? Or need to
setup a module? Or what?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

The warning you are getting is for the GTK theme being used and it should not affect the application itself. I only have a built in webcam on my laptop... and installing Cheese and running it is pretty much all I have to do.

Could you please provide more information about the cameras. e.g. make and model. Also can you describe what happens when you run Cheese. Does the app open and then fail to detect the camera? What is the output when you run 'lsusb' from the command line?

Thank for helping.

1.
When I run cheese via a terminal I get

(cheese:7625): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme directory scalable/stock of theme Minty has no size field

and the cheese window pops up. The screen is a mess - alot of checker color blocks.
(yes cheese opens, but fails to detect camera).

2.
The cameras are

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001M5 ... ss_product
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015T ... ss_product

In the customer reviews for the two cameras a person wrote it works for ubuntu.

3.
My lsusb output is

$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Did you run lsusb with the cameras plugged in? Because they should show up as USB devices when you run the command. If they were connected, it seems like they are not being detected. Try plugging them in and then running 'dmesg | grep "uvc"'

Have you used the cameras before or on another computer? Have you tried another program e.g. Ekiga?
