Audio Quality Leaves Something To Be Desired (SOLVED)

I have every version of Linux Mint installed as guests in VirtualBox. Fluxbox for some reason sounds very choppy/distorted with all radio streams in VLC, RhythmBox, Exaile etc. Especially when I open something, click a tab, move a window etc. What's odd is, the built in player on Shoutcast.com sounds ok for the most part. Do I need to install pulseaudio or something to fix this?

apparently just installing the pulseaudio package fixed everything.
