[SOLVED]Japanese Firefox, impossible?

Post by loxaheart »

Konbanwa!

For the last few hours, I've been desperately searching for a solution to my problem.

I'm trying to get a Japanese version of Firefox on my FB 9. It doesn't matter if I have an English version/option or not.

Here's what I've tried so far:
1) I changed my Fluxbox language to Japanese and installed all of the required packages.
2) Downloaded and tried to compile jp version of Firefox. This failed because there is no README or configure files after unpacking.

Code: Select all

application.ini libfreebl3.chk libxpcom.so
blocklist.xml libfreebl3.so libxul.so
chrome libmozalloc.so mozilla-xremote-client
chrome.manifest libmozsqlite3.so omni.jar
components libnspr4.so platform.ini
crashreporter libnss3.so plugin-container
crashreporter.ini libnssckbi.so precomplete
crashreporter-override.ini libnssdbm3.chk removed-files
defaults libnssdbm3.so run-mozilla.sh
dependentlibs.list libnssutil3.so searchplugins
dictionaries libplc4.so Throbber-small.gif
extensions libplds4.so update.locale
firefox libsmime3.so updater
firefox-bin libsoftokn3.chk updater.ini
hyphenation libsoftokn3.so
icons libssl3.so
3) Tried

Code: Select all

apt install build-essential
Something installed but I don't think it helped my problem :?
4) Realized that there are no .xpi language files for Linux

So there you have it ^.^ Thanks very much for any and all help, in advance!

You don't compile Firefox my friend it is already compiled. All you need to do is to unpack the tarball to a folder maybe in your home folder. Close any existing Firefox instance then start it by running

Code: Select all

~/firefox/firefox
Then if you want the Japanese version all the time change the location of your firefox shortcuts to the new address.

Okay, I closed Firefox and followed your instructions... It is still very much all English :? I know I downloaded Firefox from their Japanese website...
The thing is that, I'm not sure if this is a Firefox problem or a Mint problem.

I thought about uninstalling Firefox, but from the exploring I've done on my system, it looks complicated...

I managed to get it ^.^ Here's what I did:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge firefox
Then I unpacked the Japanese edition

Code: Select all

tar xvjf firefox-9.0.1.tar.bz2
I couldn't open Firefox using the terminal, so I went to the folder and opened it from there. The Firefox icon no longer appears, and I can't figure out how to change the shortcut in my menu lol But it's definitely the Japanese version, and all of my bookmarks, plugins and preferences were saved, so everything else will come eventually ^.^

Thanks for all the help!!

EDIT: To change shortcuts for programs in the root menu:
.mint-fm2/submenus

For example, to change the shortcut for Firefox, I used Thunar File Manager.
View > Hidden Files.
Then access
.mint-fm2 > submenus > Internet.
A text editor will pop up, I found Firefox Web Browser and changed {firefox} to {/location/of/new/firefox}. Saved and it works like a charm ^.^ I hope this is helpful *bow*
