The only issue I noticed was when I clicked on additional drivers and tried to install the broadcom-sta driver it hung up on downloading it. I was able to go into synaptic and download the drivers I needed and then when I clicked on additional drivers it was then able to install the broadcom-sta with no further issues.
I have to say that so far I like mint 13 KDe better than the other mint desktops. Keep up the good work!!
Excuse me, I'm newbie in Linux Mint KDE. I've tried Linux Mint LXDE 11.10 and now trying to use KDE version. But, where is the "Additional Drivers" setting option?

As someone who has developed, donated, and supported free software myself, I must commend the effort of the volunteers who create the Mint distros. However, I think that rather than emphasizing new graphics schemes, desktops, etc. the first priority should be to ensure that the software actually works. I have a new very standard laptop on which I installed Mint 13 only to find that the Synaptics touchpad now doesn't work. Unfortunately (stupidly), I overwrote Windows so now I am stuck unless I can get it fixed. I would think that this would be a major issue that would warrant the attention of developers and maintainers. This however has not been the case. I have received little interest and no help on tbis forum at all, and only one reply (which was a suggestion that did not work) on another forum. This is shocking for such an important issue. I have repeatedly read complaints about the lack of penetration of Linux into the desktop market, and putting out versions that don't run properly on standard laptops certainly won't help the issue.

@drwho
I would suggest you have some patience - you posted 11:00 last night, which is 20 hours ago, which really isn't that long considering everyone answering questions on the forums are volunteers. This would be a major issue if a lot of people were experiencing it, but I have seen (granted I don't look at everything, but I read a lot of threads) very few complaints about touchpad problems, so your problem isn't necessarily a major or important issue for the developers and overall user base (although it still should be fixed). As to the problem, I'll comment on the thread when I have time, but AFAIK there isn't really a "standard laptop" - I think most configurations and touchpads are at least slightly different (again AFAIK, I'm not an expert by any means).

The 'older' laptops ( < 6 months old) do have standard Synaptics touchpads AFAIK. In touchpad software I notice allowance made for even newer Synaptic touchpads. I've installed practically ALL the 'buntu-based distros on our notebooks: no touchpad problems. The standard repository has one other Synaptic software add-on. I always install it for more flexiblity. You may want to try that.

I have to ask what may be a silly question: I've got Mint 12 KDE installed on a VM and I want to do an in-place dist-upgrade it to Mint 13 KDE but I'm not seeing any info on what I need to do. I suspect it's going to include changing repos in my sources.list but I can't find what the changes are. (I know a fresh install is recommended but I've been dealing with Linux long enough I know how to deal with upgrade problems that come along. Tux knows I've done a few in-place upgrades since I stopped using Windows.)

Thank you, ulo. That's exactly the page I was looking for. It's a shame it wasn't linked to from this tutorial. I also couldn't find it with DuckDuckGo, but it may be a case of the duck needing to spider more of the Mint Community site.

ETA: After reading the page more it turns out to be part of what I was looking for. I guess now I have to find the repo list for 13. I'll poke about some more, and if push comes to shove I'll snag the ISO and just grab a sources.list from that. It's a bit of a shame that Mint is making this so hard on users. Not everyone will be willing to do a nuke and pave just to upgrade their installation.

I finally found the Maya sources.list.

Thanks caf4926. I'm running an upgrade now and once it's done I'll run a dist-upgrade.
