It looks like Elyssa will be the first Linux Mint I will not be able to use.
The installation went well, I updated the system and used the restricted drivers manager to install the ATI driver; after rebooting my screen went black.
This is exactly the same problem that I (and many others) experienced with Ubuntu Hardy.
From what I read on the Ubuntu forums it must be an incompatibility with some ATI (and even NVIDIA) graphic cards and SATA drives.
With Hardy I even tried to get the system working installing Gutsy, upgrading to 8.04 and then using EnvyNG to get the graphic card working, but the result was the same.
Is there anything else I can do?

Many thanks to Clem and the Linux Mint Team!

I just tried Elyssa Beta (or should I call her Eliza-Beth?! ) and I am very happy with the improvements in mintmenu and the new default apps. You guys did a terrific job there! :D

There were also some things that I didn't like, no offence to anyone's work, just my personal opinion.

First of all, I am a BIG fan of Jernau's work and I am really happy with the new wallpaper(I use it everywhere... :P ),
but I didn't like the new usplash. To my taste the older one was much much better. The one in Elyssa Beta is brighter and thus, in some computers you can see a big dark line on the side, indicating that the screen resolution is not well adjusted. The older one was plain black and this "dark line" wasn't noticable if you get what I mean. So please keep the usplash the way it was,or if you must change it, pick a wallpaper thats dark enough to solve this issue!I would prefer the old one though, I really liked it!

Also I liked that there are new themes available. I particuraly liked the carbon one. I think I found a bug in the themes. The colors sometimes don't update like they should[edit: It's the same issue Jernau describes in his post above]. I also found the rest of the new themes extremely simplistic and well, kind of ugly. :( Were they ment to be this way or is there something missing?

You might consider including an alternative icon theme like crashbit or elementary, if you like.

Also I was wondering if some of the issues that come with Pulse Audio(for example Audacity is not working correctly cause it does not yet support it, there is a workaround though to get it to work) will be fixed in Elyssa.

Thanks for your time and patience! Keep up the great work! :P

p.s. I didn't get to see any funny animal in the terminal(from the live cd) I really liked the idea though! :D

Everything installed fine for me. Took about 20 minutes after I manually chose my partitions. I even resized a partition using the Ubiquity installer without a problem. I don't care much for the home folder icon graphics, but i'm sure that can be changed.

Regarding Firefox3; I installed Firefox2 and had it working but couldn't install Adblock plus.

Ken

Update: Managed to get Adblock Plus working in Firefox3, so all is OK. :D

I installed Elyssa .... its running stable..

The only problem I had was with ATI card, if enable ATI restricted drivers I lost the resolution and there is no way
to go back.... anyway it seems to me Elyssa get the correct resolution without ATI drivers.... then

I decided to say goodbye to Daryna and Install in my computer only Elyssa....

My Hardware:
Laptop Acer Aspire 5100
Athlon X2 64Bits
Screen resolution 1280 x 860 (16x10)

The wireless is an Atheros ar5006 here I use ndiswrapper....

Until now everything running OK...

By the way the problem with the themes that keep previous colors until you switch to another one I go back to the
one you want is an Ubuntu problem (at least in Ubuntu 8.04 64 Bits)...

I installed aurora theme.... nice ..

then Im working with this Beta version... !!! :D

thanks to the people that make possible this GREAT Linux Distro!

Since the GUI is important to me, here are a few quirks that I've discovered over the last few hours.
Maybe these are directly related to the fact that the Aurora engine isn't present, I don't know...

* I make an adjustment to the color scheme it won't be visible until I chose another window border, or toggle desktop effects off but when I turn them back on it goes back to the previous value.

* If I change a second time, the representation on the screen doesn't update neither does the window border.
Image 2.jpg

* And sometimes it's just chaos!

***continued***
* The settings in the "Simple Compiz Config Manager" doesn't do didely-squat!
Image 4.jpg
Image 4.jpg (25.82 KiB) Viewed 2749 times

* When desktop effects are disabled and I tick the "Gnome Composite" checkbox in mintDesktop, the desktop effect window pops up, stalls for a while and then pops up a message saying "Desktop effects could not be enabled".
Image 5.jpg
Image 5.jpg (33.94 KiB) Viewed 2755 times

* However, if I disable the "Gnome Composite" in mintDesktop, and then go to the desktop effect setting and enable it, and then then go back and enable "Gnome Composite" in mintDesktop, it checks nicely and works like a charm, AND all of a sudden the settings from the "Simple Compiz Config Manager" springs to life as well. :!: :!: :!:
* Oh and one final thing: Why does mintDesktop show up under "Hardware" in the Control Center and not under "Look and Feel"?

Hi, still no surround sound with CMI9880 onboard on Asus P5AD2 Premium board. Only mono front speaker available, volume up / down uncontrolable without the hardware speaker control.

Daryna same problem [see here viewtopic.php?f=49&t=12257 ]

Pretty good: right-click for uninstall in menu!!! and DVD playback works without artifacts, wasnt default in my Daryna installation for some reason.

This isn't a bug, just a dumb question, why when running the live cd does mintupdate want to update 45 packages?

xserver-xorg-video-nv is not being used on live CD with Nvidia 7150. Resolution is stuck at 800x600. It was not recognized in Hardy, so no surprise. The "nv" driver doesn't pick it up for some reason. After installation to hard drive, and installing proprietary driver with restricted drivers manager, everything is okay. Everything else is fine on my end on two PC's. Hats off to Clem and the team.

Really impressed with the release notes. Congrats, everyone. Trying to download and seed now, but I'm not finding any peers.

according to my knowledge firefox 3 is in Beta phase and lack's compatibility to many usefull addon's

This is true, but you can edit a couple of things in about:config and be able to use any add-on. Themes don't import well, but extensions do.

Update: OK, now downloading the torrent at about 25 kB/s. Thanks. I'll be seeding through most of tomorrow as well.

Just installed Elyssa, the only problems i got are hardy ones, first, the location selector when installing drives me nuts, its like a game, it takes about 3 mins to try and click your location, the map just keeps jumping around, the second one is a real show stopper, compiz wont work at all, in hardy i could at least use normal but now i cant use any. cant find any fix for this yet, this has been my main problem since hardy beta.

The network autobrowsing feature was removed from mintDesktop as it wasn't mature enough to be part of this LTS release.

This feature has created problems in many environments
So you have to install the basic networking tools like samba and then it's rather straightforward

Yes it should :)

I'm very curious to try Mint 5 :D Release Notes sound promising! Gnome-do preinstalled?! Great idea, I'm learning to love it just now under Hardy.

Husse,

I think he means that the "share folders" is missing from administration in mint menu.

Jerry_N,

you can add "share folders" to your mint menu.
go to preferences, main menu, then select administration, then new item (launcher). name it shared folders and for the command
put shares-admin . this will give you the missing "shared folders" option :D

I have Elyssa installed. no bugs to report yet :D

great job guys!!!!!!!!

cheers,

NO!
If there will be an update path depends on how many changes are necessary to the final version and it will need some hands on - you can look at the release notes for Daryna to get an idea
It's not until version 6 that we will have a tool for "automatic" upgrades

Hi Clem,

Is KVM (The Kernel Virtual Machine) included in Elyssa ?
Would be nice to be able to run some JeOS VM's under Mint ;)
