Thanks, Clem.

I tried to post this to your blog, but it never showed up.

I'm using a pair of SSDs in RAID1. What is the possibility that the Live/installer environments could (still?) get support for mdadm?

Right now users have to jump through some pretty tricky hoops if they want to use Linux RAID with Mint. I don't mind, now that I've got the process nailed, but for new users, and the less-computer-savvy, well...

In fact: Installing Mint 17 MATE RC over my Mint 16 install was kind of ugly. Install failed on trying to install grub to /dev/sda (dunno why--subsequent manual "grub-install /dev/sda" from a terminal works just fine). Same thing happens with Mint 16 MATE.

Thanks,
Jim

Important info:
Login screen freezes for German speaking users
NVIDIA Optimus cards do not work (yet)
EFI Support
Bluetooth
PAE required for 32-bit ISOs
Other issues

the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 32bit, simply states that it is for PCs with <2Gb ram,
- has anyone tested it for it's non_pae status ?.

as there still is a number of PCs that are 32bit non_pae - this is still an issue.

- most of those coming from WIN_XP - - will be running a 32bit non_pae type PC.
(coming from a PC recycle Point-of-View)

I was so worried because of all my failed attempts to install Ubuntu 14.04LTS and learning that my AMD nvida was the problem and all my attempts to

fix it failed, that MInt Qiana 17 would not install either. Ta dut da da, I installed Qiana mate 17 yesterday and it is a dream!! Thank you Mint team!!!!!!! Qiana

has such a beautiful desktop, like wow! man..

Threw the RC Mate version in Virtualbox last night. Flawless install. It took me about 30 minutes to set up my panel, do some customizing and download a few of my favorite programs. The RC is running like a dream! The new Mate is really sweet! By comparison my Ubuntu 14.04 download had many issues and it took me a few days to get it working right. Good job Clem & team!!

Hardware:

Asus Z87-A Motherboard
Intel Core i5-4570S Haswell CPU
Intel 530-Series 240GB SSDs (2)

All the installs done off a thumb drive.

Goal was to install Mint 17 MATE using mdadm (native Linux) RAID. /boot in its own 512MB partition/RAID1 (mirrored) set; /, swap, /var and everything else in separate RAID1 set, inside the 2nd partition.

1st experiment was to install "over the top of" an existing Mint 16 MATE installation, preserving /usr/local and /home. That was a success.

2nd experiment was to wipe everything and start from scratch, trying to make the two partitions to contain the RAID1 sets gpt partition tables. That failed, just as it had with Mint 16. Don't know why. Never get the grub prompt or anything. Maybe I missed something? Maybe I'll try again. (This is a new system. I plan to wipe it and start from scratch when the Mint 17 stable releases are published, anyway.) I suspect the reason this experiment failed was I did not boot Live from the UEFI boot?

3rd experiment was to wipe everything and start from scratch, again, with the two partitions to contain the RAID1 sets to be msdos partition tables. That had been a stable configuration with Mint 16. That worked with Mint 17, as well.

Both experiments #1 and #3 survived the subsequent upgrade/reboot process, so I'm calling it a stable configuration.

Looks good, Mint dev team :)

Jim

Just tried Mint17 Mate RC-64bit. Copied to DVD, booted and testing from there.

Initial observations:- Slow to boot from drive .. 3min 45secs to a workable desktop. (I3-4GB ram)
First boot showed 10 instances of caja opened on the desktop and all closed OK. Subsequent boots OK.
From mate menu all applications, the icons in the center column (applications) were missing, but after clicking a few of the menu options they appeared.

Biggest concern for me is non functioning bluetooth. It appears that the software is installed though, but there is no mention of Bluetooth anywhere in the menus or indeed in the control center box (I know it's a RC). Installed Blueman from the software manager and it showed up there and in the menu. But like previous versions of Mint (and other Ubuntu based distros) it does not work. Having said that, I have managed to get bluetooth working in my everyday Mint 13 install after a lot of trial and error. I have a Logitech Mobile boombox speaker and for some reason, Linux has difficulty in connecting to it. It's hit or miss and sometimes I need to remove it and Search again to re-establish a connection. Other times, turning bluetooth on and off brings it to life. My other devices, phone, tablet etc. connect instantly and remember the device over subsequent boots. This is a show stopper for me, as I use BT constantly and several others I support are similarly affected. It's a major factor.

Other changes seem well thought out and enhance the distro. Maybe Mint could lead the way and sort out this neverending BT problem once and for all. In spite of this, it's still the best distro out there. Well done!
Cheers!

Tried both the 32 bit and the 64 bit versions of 17 Mate, and they're brilliant.

In fact they seem virtually identical to the latest version of LMDE which I have installed.

Great work Clem and Team!

I been a long time user of Mint ever since Mint 9 and will always be a supporter of the MInt project because or quality and ease or use.

This last week I downloaded and installed MInt 17 and the install went pretty smoothly. As I went about installing my personal apps I did notice that Chromium version 34.0.1847.116 had some issues with plugins that just wouldn't stay installed. This is no big deal since I chalk this up to this version of Chromium, besides after installing Google Chrome I didn't have this issue, also I do realize this is the RC and Mint 17 will only improve over the next few weeks and I look forward to it as my primary OS.

Loaded up Mate 32bit.Went really well. Seems all is well, however, just one glitch I've found. When I come out of suspend I lose my Internet connection.I'm hardwired.I have to reboot to restore it.After rebooting I checked network settings.DNS SERVERS was showing 127.0.1.1 and Search Domains showed my modem model number .After coming out of suspend both of these settings were blank. After I reboot both are populated again. No big deal, but suspend worked all this time with Mate 13 32bit.

One thing I noticed that looks like a problem, no idea if it unique to this release. When I installed I was given the option to "replace my existing Mint installation" (I'd installed Mint 16 previously with some custom partitioning). What it didn't say is that it silently repartitions the drive. If that's the intent, I *really* think the user should be given some sort of warning.

Other than that I'm very impressed. This was on an old Asus eee PC 1000HA that had been upgraded to 2 GB RAM. It also worked seamlessly with dual monitors (buiilt-in + external). And I love it that Picasa is a painless install. Great work!

Bug reporting should be done through the release announcement on the blog http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2616

Hi everyone! Thanks for the work you have done with "Qiana".

I would like to know if there is a definitive date for the final release or an estimate time for the iso to hit the streets.

Thanks in advance for the info.

Great! I installed it on a Macbook made in late 2008, 64bit, 4gb ram. No problems! It is running just fine! Updates are installing fine! Very smooth!
There was a small problem with the mac trackpad, but they was an answer for that here on the forums! I wiped the hard drive, so LM 17 is the only thing on it.
Thank you to everyone who works so hard to bring us a fine product!!
