Forum reorganization June 2014

Some forums have been deleted, moved or renamed today. If you are missing some forum you frequented before, see below where it went. The purpose of the reorganization is to keep the forums clear for our users, and to remove the confusion some of these forums had been causing.

We reorganized the forums to account for current releases of Linux Mint, removing some historic forums only relevant for obsolete releases of Linux Mint. Some forums with very low traffic that had become less relevant for current releases of Linux Mint have been merged into other forums. Some forums had become redundant and have consequently been merged into other forums as well. The titles of forums for non-English users have been translated to the respective languages.

What about splitting up some forum sections? For instance, take a look at the Hardware support section. All questions regarding any kind of hardware is thrown on one hump. The reason why (forum) users post the same problem several times is because of the lack of clarity. To find a solution you have dig into that big, cluttered hump. The search function isn't really handy/helpfull either....

Why not break the Hardware Support section up into sub-forums which has been done with the Desktops & Window Managers section(as an example):

Hardware Support
=> Audio and graphics (all audio and graphical devices related issues/problems/questions)
=> Optical and Storage devices (all hard disc, memory discs/sticks and cd/dvd-drive devices related issues/problems/questions)
=> Hardware and Peripherals (all motherboard, keyboard, mouse, other input devices and other hardware related issues/problems/questions)
=> printers and Scanners (all printer and scanning devices related issues/problems/questions)

I think this will contribute to make some forum items more clearer.
Just a wild thought on my part.....

xenopeek:

I would concur with that suggestion, and add one of my own -- albeit fearing it might be a tad OT:

The search engine reasonably refuses simple searches that might generate thousands of hits, but there need to be exceptions specific to Linux, such as "NFS" and other succinctly named functions that would otherwise be difficult to search for.

One solution, albeit an imperfect one (the user must use Google), is to use Google to do a site-search. For example, paste this into any Google search box:

Code: Select all

site:http://forums.linuxmint.com NFS
(where "NFS" is whatever term you wish to search this website for).

Hope this helps!

BuzzTrout69's suggestion works for all major search engines (DuckDuckGo, Yahoo!, Google, and so on).

Thanks for the suggestion. I have used google in that manner on another site that has a deficient search engine, but I somehow mentally overlooked the value of using it here.

Several suggestions:
1. as some known reason, in China google is not available, please make other search engine such as bing ,yahoo or even baidu as options;
2. make the default font larger;
3. update Tapatalk if possible;
4. make a sub-forum for cinnamon spices especially the X-lets

Thanks.

1. Linux Mint ships with Yahoo!, DuckDuckGo, Ixquick and Startpage search engines (and Amazon and Wikipedia). Other search engines like Baidu and Bing can be added through clicking on down arrow icon in Firefox search bar, selecting to Manage Search Engines, then clicking to Get more search engines. That takes one to http://www.linuxmint.com/searchengines.php, from where at the bottom these other search engines can be added by clicking on their icon. But what has this to do with forum reorganization? :)

2. Ctrl++ immediately increases font size. Or click the + icon at the top of the Firefox menu.

3. Is that needed right now?

4. Something to consider going forward, thanks.

1. it was my mistake, I thought the forum search engine is based on those engines (but it is not);

2. I know some ways to increases font size, but as a suggestion I made here is making default font size larger
because sometimes it is hard to distinguish the text and the following signature (may be it is a UI issue not a problem with font size);

3. after Iast time you update it, only once the tapatalk evoke a notification, It was just a kindly reminder :D

4. thanks
