With each release we publish instructions on how to upgrade
Now we have released an upgrade tool, see

This is the only supported method - if you "upgrade" to the next version of Ubuntu using Synaptic or apt-get we do not support this as you risk breaking your system completely. This means no questions answered about it.
If you fail using the recommended method you are welcome to ask for help

It might be worth mentioning that upgrade instructions are available as part of the Release notes from the download page, eg for Elyssa: http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_elyssa.php ... structions, which also includes detailed information on why upgrading CAN go wrong and how to do it correctly.

One thing that people tend to forget, is BACKUP EVERYTHING !
If you are not able or wanting to backup, then do not even attempt any kind of upgrade between versions.

Also, a sanity check is to run the LiveCD of the new version to check for stability, as there can sometimes be bugs unique to specific systems (like badly configured xorg causing my laptop to freeze with 8.04/Elyssa), that might warrant delaying upgrade to new version until the issue is resolved or a workaround found.

Is there a guide for doing a fresh install, but then importing settings, home directory etc back into the new version, as IMHO is is the route of least strife.

In spite of the name I no longer recommend a separate home partition but a separate partition for your data
