Congratulations on your new release! I know you and all who supported developing really do put a lot of effort in doing it!

Installed it yesterday. I like it because it is friendlier with my low-resource machine, but I need to look up some tips and tricks because I am a little bored with some of the defaults (or just want more of my own look and feel) -
Like the keyboard shortcuts for switching workspaces! (I dig keyboard shortcuts)
But so far, so good. I am liking it lots!
(I have used FluxBox and other lightweight desktop managers in the past.)

Installed it on VBox under Helena as Host OS...Although I haven't yet tested Fluxbox, I feel it's nice...

Congratulations for this release...

Congratulations on release ...

But, I have one question, Fluxbox needs 256 MB ram? ( to install i presume )
So can you make optimizations so i could run Fluxbox on 128Mb ram?
I have old laptop pentium 400Mhz 8GB hard drive and 128MB ram 1024x768.
So could i run Fluxbox on it, or should rather i use "Puppy Linux" ?
( right now i have installed "Windows XP sp3 Lite" on it )

Actually I test Fluxbox RC1 *mint8* ! That a great and fast version. Very nice for the old PC . The boot on LiveCD is really fast.
I do not know yet that version and I had not tested the. I hope so this version is come back for long time.

Thank to dev :P

Hi, this distro can be made to run very light. In a virtual machine I have a lot of things turned off, e.g. bluetooth and printing... and it uses ~50MB at startup. The reason for the 256MB RAM is the installer which requires a lot of RAM compared to the rest of the OS. However, if you create a swap partition, enable it before starting the installer and choose the manual partitioning option in the installer you should be able to install with 128MB RAM. It may take a while though.

Same situation for me I got this dell that wont even let me install linux Mint 8 on it... so hopefully this might work on it :)

My dell has 128MB RAM. The ram's to expensive very rare and not even for sale in most stores anymore. =[

It's not worth upgrading either way becuase eh.. why bother... it's an ancient machine.

I'm going to give Fluxbox a try on this Dell. I hope it's easy to use. =]

btw I don't know why but puppy linux totally messes up when it freezes my PC and i have to force it to shut off (by pushing and holding power button) it totally corrupts the whole OS and I have to reinstall puppy linux over and over. I did the full install of puppy. That's nuts. >:O

hopefully fluxbox wont corrupt itself if it freezes my PC. :s

I'm back fluxbox wouldn't install on my 128MB ram DELL Pentium 4

This crap(PC) doesn't work for jack.. Even XP is slow on this thing I took XP off to becuase it was getting on my nerves so now I have a PC with no OS lol.

lol I got this far then the disc stops spinning and the eventual *freeze*

If anyone got any farther on 128MB of ram let me know and I only Got the mouse AFTER SEVERAL TRIES of black screens of Death. I got farther than expected for someone with a PC that doesn't meet the requierments so I'm proud of that much even if it seems little. Why does this PC have the rarest ram? Seriously Husse I couldn't find it in Walmart. Some prices for it online where jacked up to and I'm talking about a 256 MB Ram stick not a 1 GB going for alot of cash. I don't remember what kind of ram it uses. I just don't think it's worth investing more cash into this relic. I guess I'm going to have to stick to puppy on this old Dell with furgal installs (that way i can just back up the last saved file thing if it ever freezes again). =S

Thanks for the message Husse but heres a pic of where I got up to with this machine. I don't expect a fix or nothing since it's not meeting the min requierments.

Edit:

LOL I tried again and I got a little farther ^.^

LOL@menu xD

I'm going to try what you said guy below me sorry I forgot your name lol

I'm going to try Linux MINT 8 GNOME with those suggestions if that fails then I'll try Flux Box again with your suggestions.

It should be possible to install on a 128MB RAM machine. But it will take forever :D It is a bit of work, but you can try this:

(I am assuming you have some knowledge of Linux)

1 - Stop all unnecessary services. This will include bluetooth, cron, power management, CUPS, etc to free up some RAM. The command to run is:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/<name of service> stop

2 - Stop any user-run applications. Have a look at ~/fluxbox/startup to see what is started by default and kill those. This should free more RAM.

3 - Start up the Partition Manager. If you have to install it, you can install Gparted. The command line tool 'fdisk' is already installed.

4 - Create a swap partition however big you want to have it. You can create the other partitions now also.

5 - Enable the swap partition.
$ sudo swapon /dev/sda<number of the partition>

6 - Start the installer and on the partitioning step, do manual partitioning. Proceed as usual.

Hope it works.

There were successful test runs down to 192 MB of RAM with no swap on some of the more current builds. 256 is listed as the minimum basically to provide a little bit of cushion.

Actually how do I create a swap partition if i have no OS installed in this Dell? lol..do I have to boot into puppy live CD again?

How do I even get this old hag (Dell) to recognize that parition as a swap in the live session? Screw it I'll give it 1GB swap and see if that solves some problems. I'm probably going to do this all wrong so... wish me luck lol.

I tried the sudo command to disable some processes in the boot menu but it just began booting into the Live CD session did I goof up? It's still not loading the OS. I'm not mad I'm just doing this for fun cuz i have no life for today and I'm just guna do this for a bit. Who knows it might just work. :s

-be back later

Oh wait I think you mean after I log into a live session? lol well thats the problem It freezes before I even get into the session. The Task Bar is the farthest I could get. On time I got to right click, and select Instal followed by a hang and it frooze. I went into Puppy Linux and I did some partitioning (thats the only thing that this relic will boot into).

...maybe i should make a thread on this becuase I'm sort of hijacking the release thread.

Hey just want to note, It worked I did it... 1 GB of SWAP did the trick maybe i went overboard with 1 GB but screw it lol i didn't care it's installed now I got a video issue in flux box but i think i'm better off creating a new topic for that instead of hijacking this post lol.
