mintUpdate 1.4 is out!
mintUpdate 1.4 comes with the following new features:
- Dist-Upgrade. Turned off by default. Experienced users can now turn this option on in the preferences.
- Dependency checking. If packages that are not installed are needed by packages that are upgradable they show up as well.
mintUpdate 1.4 is also now using python to talk to APT rather than relying on wajig.
You can get the debs for it here:
http://linuxmint.com/repository/daryna/ ... 4_i386.deb
http://linuxmint.com/repository/daryna/ ... 0_i386.deb
It should be compatible with Cassandra and Celena.
And as usual, you're more than welcome to give us your comments and feedback on this.

That works fine.clem wrote:Merlwiz: can you make a KDE .dektop file for mintUpdate which uses /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpdate/icons/stock_lock.png for the icon and "kdesu /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpdate/mintUpdate.py show 0 &" for the Exec. Test to see if it works fine and paste it here. I'll make a mintupdate-kde package out of it.

It shows up in Settings and System so one has to be removed.
I was wondering if we could change the way everything is packaged.
Example mintupdate-kde could have the icons, /etc/xdg/autostart/mintUpdate.desktop, and the /usr/share/applications/mintUpdate.desktop.
This would make it a dependency, but I would like to change the icons for XFCE CE.

This is working much better. So far hasn't knocked out my Network Manager, either. I also like the dependencies thingy.
EDIT: My test of whether or not it would knock out my Network Manager has involved multiple re-bootings, wired and wireless, closing and quitting mintUpdate a number of times and still - the Network Manager holds fast. I don't know what was up with 1.3 but I can't replicate the aforementioned glitch. As I said, all seems well with 1.4.

One interesting little thing, though, is this:
I use Window Selector for my panel. When I open it, whether mintUpdate is running or quit, I see in the Window Selector drop-down menu "mintUpdate.py" with no icon. And when I select this thing, this appears on my screen:
http://i24.tinypic.com/16kxbpi.png
That thing floating in the browser window cannot be opened or moved, but it disappears once I return to anything else in the Window Selector menu.
Why am I getting "mintUpdate.py" in the Window Selector menu? I have Beryl in my panel as well, and it doesn't show up in the menu. Also, what is this thing floating on my screen?
Don't really know if this is a "bug" per se, but it did strike me as odd. Anyway, no big deal. Just so you know.[/img]

Husse: it's just another option to give more choice to the user. It's not specific to Mint.. the same way you can do "apt-get upgrade" or "apt-get dist-upgrade" you can set mintUpdate to see "upgrade" packages or "dist-upgrade" packages.
MintUpdate 1.4 should be a tiny bit faster than 1.3 because it doesn't write/read files and rely on wajig as it did before.. it now talks directly to APT through python. It could also be a bit slower because it now looks at dependencies... download speed should be the same though
red-e-made: I'll have a look at that window-selector thing. Nothing was done about the network manager problem as I couldn't reproduce it, but I'm glad it doesn't happen again for you.
Boo: I suppose we could call it mintupdate-core but... you should be able to run it on its own, so it's not just a core package installed only as a dependency.
Merlwiz: The problem with icons being in the desktop packages would be that mintupdate would have a dependency on them.. that would require a meta-package and just to change the color of the icons it's definitely overkill. As for /etc/xdg it should work with any desktop. Can you send me the KDE desktop file??

I sent an email to you with the KDE desktop file I for got to change the icon info but that's easy enough.clem wrote: Merlwiz: The problem with icons being in the desktop packages would be that mintupdate would have a dependency on them.. that would require a meta-package and just to change the color of the icons it's definitely overkill. I was talking about for installing you would use the -DE you have and it would install the core as a dependency.
Also in Daryna it would already be installed.
It doesn't matter right now, since it's just being tested.
Mintupdate 1.4 is working beautifully on my Celena system. This is sooo much nicer than the update system used on Ubuntu (and other Gnome based systems) I love the ratings system. Much friendlier for noobies (even though I'm an experienced Linux user.) I wouldn't be surprised if other distros "steal" this little gem. Thanks Clem!!!
About the dist-upgrade: if in doubt, don't use it But it won't change your sources.list and have Gutsy step on your Celena.. It's another example of our way of doing things: more power to the user but with safe default configurations. Levels 4 and 5 are unsafe and invisible, dist-upgrade is disabled... you can go in the preferences and change all that but if you're not experienced with APT just leave them the way they are.

Help!
I discovered a problem which seems (at least in an indirect way) to be related to the new mintUpdate:
I installed it, made an update of the HAL (which was classified with "3") and then got an error message concerning the network manager. I rebooted the system. After that after logging in the boot process stopped. I can see and move the mouse pointer, I can start the process manager by using a predefined shortcut and end X using it, but there seems no way to boot gdm. Especially not because I'm not very experienced with Linux yet...
And I'm not the only one with this problem:

How?... and give us the exact name of the package?
Re: Help!
As far as I can see, those were the same. This update came out on Wednesday or Thursday, if I remember well, and was classified as "4" and changed to "3" yesterday. So I thought "well, it seems to be alright now, lets install".nametaken wrote:I'm somewhat of a power user, so I've made visible levels 4 and 5. Is it possible installing the level 3 update without the level 4 update is causing the problem?
