To make it more compatible with 'exotic' (or just old) hardware. Last time I looked it used the following boot 'cheat' codes - xforcevesa, nomodeset, b43-blacklist=yes, noapic, noacpi, nosplash, irqpoll.

They are easy enough to google if you want to find out about them.

If it won't work the normal way then you try the other way, that is all there is to it.
