Anyone tried Gnome3 lately ?

Anyone run Gnome3 lately ?

Im quite suprised at how nice its become since initial release, I mean sure its no gnome2, but its kinda grown on me to the point where i use it above Cinnamon. With a few extensions i have it setup nicely working exactly how i would want my linux desktop to look. I find Cinnamon a bit limited in options and aplets.

My biggest problem was getting a working windows list to display in gnome3, but once i managed to get that working its been a pleasure using it. Also my biggest worry is will the guys maintain their extensions in future versions ...

And im talking about the default Gnome3, not the cinnamon or fedora edition.

not really sure, i have been using linux on and off for the last few years, now im pretty much running it full time. I remember when gnome first came out i tried it and it was a mess, lots of crashes, very unstable, couldn't find my way around it, you had no windows list to see open apps etc etc.

Now that ive reinstalled i havnt experienced any crashes unless ive install extensions that are out of date. So its running nice and stable, I can customise quite a fair bit with window borders, cursor theme, icon theme and so forth, they also have quite a nice selection of extensions that add quite a variety of functionality.

Cinnamon on the other hand has a standard menu that you cant change, sure you can select a different theme, but that just changes the colour pretty much and nothing else, my menu on Gnome3 looks similar to the Unity Menu at the moment, that is how much a single extension can change stuff. On my bottom bar i have a windows list, some nice animations and also windows preview like windows 7 and 8 has when you hover mouse over an app.

So all in all, after running gnome3 for a few days and sorting through extensions and messing around with everything i find myself quite liking it.

I tried the Ubuntu Gnome3 Remix for a while, about a month. I didn't like it better than Cinnamon and I didn't keep it, but I did like it better than I expected.

Dont know ubuntu's version, so cant comment on that. the one i installed was a barebone Gnome3 desktop enviremoment on top of Cinnamon, and then just started adding extension after extension. As i said my biggest problem was getting a bottom bar with a windows list working, but once i got that sorted it runs like a dream.

I havnt even started installing themes yet, but im about to mess with that and see how that works out.

Ill make a short vid clip of my dekstop when im done :)

Keep in mind i am not great at making videos at all, infact this is first one i ever did, used vlc and im not sure i got any of the settings right, i set FPS to 25, but it looks quite slow, think i should have set it higher ? but regardless, it shows off how my desktop pretty much looks at the moment.

O and i forgot to show all the options for the bottom bar, it has a whole menu on its own :)

Check out the clip here.

Can you see how different it looks to standard Gnome3 ? few extensions make the whole desktop look and feel different. now Cinnamon should be customizable like that :D

O and the main reason i started looking for an alternative desktop was because of the annoying ATI/Cinnamon bug that makes the screen flicker when you autohide the taskbar. it was starting to work on my nerves and so i tried Mate, KDE and finaly Gnome3.

Yep might want to work on making it better not as sharp and hard to see except in general layout sort of thing.

Also add info about system used distro used and extensions added in the info box under video.
Will minimize a lot of question comments asking about them.

I agree with you, so I gave up cinnamon.

I like Gome3 too, but it is heavy for my netbook (signature)

My favorite edition of mint is the Mate Edition, I love it above ALL others. If i had to reinstall now i would install Mate ( Mate+Compiz= Everything you need and looks awesome ). However i know Mint 15 is just a few months away ( roughly around May/June ) and i dont fancy reinstalling now and them having to do it again, so i will wait for 15 and then download Mate edition, in the mean time ill get to know Gnome better, Im quite enjoying it so far :)

What you're talking about is Gnome Shell. Ubuntu 12.10 are Mint 14 Cinnamon also use Gnome 3.

That's certainly not my experience. Cinnamon doesn't yet have quite as many addons as gnome-shell has, but you have to consider everything that's built into Cinnamon. E.g. the most popular GS extension is one that removes the Universal Access panel button - in Cinnamon that's built-in, you can remove the applet with the settings tool. So is media player integration, loading user themes, removable drive menu etc. etc. And if you compare the options given in Cinnamon Settings to those given to you in gnome-tweak-tool, I'm baffled you have arrived at the conclusion the latter gives you more options. In Cinnamon you can add all four hot corners and assign any action to them, you can choose from one of 4 different alt-tab options, you can resize panels and easily choose bottom, top or dual panel setup etc. The windows list extension is very limited compared to the windows list applet in Cinnamon. More options in Gnome Shell? What I like about Gnome Shell is that it is more refined than Cinnamon, more coherent, and has the unified overview - but it certainly doesn't have more options.

Not crazy about Gnome's philosophy of hyper-control and diminishing features. But having said that, Shell is much improved from a few releases ago. Been using it on top of Wheezy and it is fast and solid. I'm interested in trying out the latest Cinnamon on LMDE. in Maya it was slow and sometimes froze for a few seconds, not very smooth, hoping for a better Cinnamon experience on Debian. MATE is just so freaking good and reliable that I hope it never goes away. Recently installed it on Wheezy and it's so good I could live without all the other Linux desktops if it was the only one left. I expect it to be excellent on LMDE.

Firstly Cinnamon is not without problems. It suffers from the ATI / Panel autohide bug ( and has for the last 2 releases ), i dont think you have a clue of how annoying it is. That is the main reason i started looking at other desktop enviroments. It also has a memory leak problem, ive seen few times when my CPU usage has shot up and laptop runs hot when using cinnamon, restarting shell fixes it. I went on and installed Mate edition, which runs faster and smoother than Cinnamon, but with most of the compiz plugins removed its not as flashy as it used to be, So i installed Gnome3 and now i switch between Gnome3 and mate, and my whole point of the thread was that i myself was surprised at how much better Gnome3 has become. Right now its at the point where i prefer it to cinnamon, simply because i love the eye candy, i love being able to use the mate customisations within Gnome3 and at same time i have 3D work spaces, stuff popping up and down, lots of nice info plugins on my panel ( far more than cinnamon or mate ) and the windows preview feature is BRILLIANT and on its own can be customised quite a bit, and its fast and snappy. and Gnome shell only uses 270mb. i know it doesnt look fast in the vid, but that is just fps drop due to recording, in normal mode i click its there, no lag or waiting for anything.

So until the ATI/Panel autohide bug is fixed on Cinnamon i will not even attempt to install it. But i have seen that cinnamon is getting better, and plugins are starting to show up more now, so who knows, if that bug is fixed down the row somewhere i might run it again, but at the same time Gnome3 is also maturing nicely as well and i wont be surprised if it too starts showing up in more and more distro's in the next year or 2.

I suggest you watch the video clip and see how customisable it is since anitial release id say its come a long way, and with option its superior to cinnamon at this stage. vid clip link : http://youtu.be/PG567W2OMQk ( set quality to HD in fullscreen )

Yes, but that's something else. If Cinnamon doesn't play well with your graphics, you're screwed, and it reflects poorly on Cinnamon. But it has nothing to do with how Cinnamon works, how many options it has, what's possible to do with it, etc.

Thanks, but I know gnome shell, I design themes for it. You have added a lot of extensions. You can add a lot of applets and extensions in Cinnamon. It's not really a big deal.

It seems that a lot of people aren't clear on this point. Cinnamon is a shell for GNOME 3. So is GNOME Shell. Looks like the new Consort desktop in SolusOS is another GNOME 3 shell. I have Ubuntu 12.04 running here, with Unity, but I've added GNOME Shell; whether I'm logged into a Unity session or a GNOME Shell session, it's still GNOME 3.
