I will use opengeu repositories to install e17. You should get a working e17 desktop in 5 minutes.
Copy to terminal:

$ wget -q http://opengeu.linuxfreedom.com/ubuntu/dists/repo.key -O - | sudo apt-key add -

Now open Software Sources -> Other Software -> Add copy and paste this:

deb http://opengeu.linuxfreedom.com/ubuntu karmic opengeu main extras

... close and refresh.

Now copy these to terminal one by one:

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get upgrade

When you insert this command:

$ sudo aptitude install opengeu-desktop

you will get some errors, but press y

Log out and choose Enlightenment from sessions.

In first run wizard choose the Standard profile to get a clean e17.

I've used E16 in the past and it was a lot of fun. For some reason I thought that E17 was going to be available in the Lucid repos, but I guess not, I don't see it.

Wow, its been awhile since I've used E. What a nice window manager. Still kind of hard to configure and E17 has "crashed" a few times already but I think I am hooked for awhile. Its a nice change from a standard Gnome desktop.

I might try this. I have never used the OpenGEU repos before, but I do like having E17 as an option.

Anyone notice problems with NTFS read/write when logged into E17?

I tried this, and I love how E17 looks and feels, but for some reason my wlan0 keeps disconnecting randomly. I'm browsing at normal speeds sometimes, but then I just can't connect for a minute or two. It's a shame, too - I really like Enlightenment.

It is such a good technology. Enlightenment 0.17 is the next generation of UNIX graphical environments. E17 is not just a window manager but it is also a desktop shell. E17 is highly configurable. Enlightenment is fast. E 17 is run on very slow machines like 100 Mhz CPU, 64 MB of RAM well.

Just installed like this and now whenever I log out, my screen goes black like it's not getting a signal and everything seems locked up. When I reboot normally, it tries to load the "First run" thing and I can't do anything. When I boot in recovery mode I can get back to gnome or xfce from console, but the session manager seems shot. Reinstalling GDM wasn't any help and now I don't know how to fix this. Any help would be appreciated. :(

Did you backup your installation?

I always install Remastersys and make a backup of my system to reinstall, at least with the basics like my video driver, Wine, flash, TVtime, added repositories, hacking tools, ect. I reinstall from there a lot because I often break my system.

You can also use APTonCd and use that on top of a normal install.

Then there is the backup tool that mint includes, which is the fastest/easiest way IF it works depending on how you broke your system.

You can also use the CLI and use 'Aptitude Purge' on all the apps and metapackages you recently installed.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Code: Select all
sudo aptitude purge e17

did the trick. In a way it's kinda too bad, I was liking it the hour or so I was checking it out. Just can't figure out what was making the "log out black screen of death" :?

Glad you have your desktop back.....

You could try it again....try adding a different repository. There are several that have E17. OpenGEU is transitioning to Debian, but OzOS and MoonOS are good choices. MoonOS is based on Mint, but you cant dual boot them because they make each other crash. I think you could add the repos though.

Also, E17 is light enough that you might get away with running it in virtualbox with the fire and rain modules in full effect.

Managed to get it reinstalled using the guide at http://jeffhoogland.blogspot.com/2010/05/howto-install-e17-from-svnsource-on.html. No more logout freezing, but doesn't detect internet or ALSA.

There has to be a fix for that.

Log back into Gnome and install more packages for E17 and trouble shoot from there.

Or you could try yet another repo.....

Go with a meta-package, not just the base DE.

was able to get alsa working by installing libasound2-dev thanks to

I tried installing emodule-exalt thinking that might do the trick, when to my horror it trashed network-manager. Had to boot from live cd to download the NM packages back, remove exalt, reinstall NM, and still no internet on E17. :x

Got internet working by running nm-applet and trayer, so finally everything seems to be working well. I look forward to seeing how you got it working.

Also was wondering since I couldn't find one, is there an uninstall guide for http://jeffhoogland.blogspot.com/2010/05/howto-install-e17-from-svnsource-on.html? Probably won't try to remove it anytime soon, but was just wondering the cleanest way to remove it from this method for later on.
