Tried all above ... also reversed the 'Blacklisted' and still the same.
i wouldn't have pursued it unless i thought i had a bum disk burn - but all chsum and cd checks ok - os seems to be functioning fine too (except for this issue).
Don't know why it's showing the 2 kernel modules tho.
Since fluxbox is lighter, thought would be best for the older computer. At this point i think i will stick with what's working for me (Gnome mint)

add: this stubborn mule will re-install again and see if i can take a look at another fresh install before i hang it up to dry
