Network manager - how do I scan for wifi access points?

Hi all,
This is probably a very stupid question that has a very clear answer, but I'm completely lost.
How on earths name do I scan for availble wireless routers in LM12 LXDE?
I'm kind of used getting a list of available routers, but here I have only one (the one I'm currently connected to). Network manager can not seem to pick up the second router that is also next to me. (I have two android phones acting as routers for the purpose of testing) Also - there are plenty of people in the neighbourhood with wifi routers, so I should be able to see them as well...
- Am I missing something?
