[LXDE] Display manager works only after killing Xorg

Hi there,
I just experienced something quite strange. After years of using opensuse I thought to try something different. I have an old IBM T43p thinkpad for which the LXDE desktop seems to be best suited. So, I tried the LM12 LXDE live CD, every thing worked fine and I like the design of it, therefore, I installed it to disk by formatting the root partition to get a fresh install of LM. I used the same user than in opensuse in order to not to loose all mails, settings... During the live session I did not change anything, therefore, it is an out-of-the-box installation.

Now, after installation I got: no display manager, i.e. no window borders, no startup menu, no background... Ctrl-Alt+Backspace (2x) does not work neither. There were, however, the welcome screen and Pidgin, so basically the system is running. This gave me the possibility to run firefox by clicking an entry on the welcome screen to investigate the problem. What I then found out as a workaround was to enter tty1 (Ctrl+Alt+F1), kill Xorg (!) which in turn opened the login screen on tty7. There I have to choose MINT-LXDE to successfully login, if I choose Default, I end up again without window borders, startup menus, panels ....
Since it seems that I have to do this every time LM is started I need to know what I can do to change to MINT-LXDE as default? Changing for instance in the Advanced Options tab of "Desktop Session Settings" openbox-lxde to mint-lxde does not change anything. Help is very much appreciated!

I realized that I can remove the autologin option. Now, I end up at the login screen where I can choose the Mint-LXDE desktop without killing Xorg in tty1. Still, it is kind of weird that the "default" desktop does not work properly when setting autologin to true.
