Set static IP address in Mint 12. [SOLVED]

Postby stchman on Sun May 20, 2012 3:28 pm

Hello all.

First post. I have been an Ubuntu user for a long time and am now using Linux Mint. On my LAN I use static IP addresses and I usually edit the:

/etc/network/interfaces

file. When editing I enter the following:

Code: Select all
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet static
address <desired static IP address>
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway <router gateway>

auto eth0

This does not appear to work. I have consulted the Ubuntu Oneric documentation as Mint 12 is a fork of Ubuntu 11.10. The documentation tells me to do this as well.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

This will only work if you remove network-manager, otherwise it will be ignored. If you want to use network-manager you need to change to manual ip and set the static ip in the ipv4 properties tab of the connection, run nm-connection-editor.
[Edit] your original post and add [SOLVED] once your question is resolved.

From the menu, System Tools > System Settings > Network. Click Configure, and set the settings you need on the IPv4 tab. The settings are then saved in "/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/Wired connection 1" (unless you have renamed the "Wired connection 1").

I have disccovered that there is a "trick" to making the method outlined above work and it has to do with an appropriately timed "enter" that is not at all intuitive:

See the following for details: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=87795
Please add a [SOLVED] at the end of your original subject header if your question has been answered and solved.

I can confirm that remoulder is correct! Please provide guidance as I would prefer to use cmd line whenever I can. If I remove the network manager will this break anything else?
