Wired connection established but cannot connect to internet.

Postby GaleWhale on Thu May 10, 2012 6:09 pm

Hey guys my parents have been using my old laptop as their own for quite sometime and since it was running vista for four years I decided to install Linux mint over it to try and spruce it up a bit. The installation went great and the only problem I'm having is getting internet access. I configured a wired connection and it tells me I'm connected, but when I try and access the internet on Firefox it cannot connect to a server. I'm a total noob at Linux so any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Thanks for the reply! I don't have mintWifi in my /lib/ folder and I can't connect through wifi anyhow because I have a driver missing, that's why I've been trying a wired connection. Is there a way to install drivers without a connection? Under the "Additional Drivers" section in system settings it tells me I can activate Broadcom STA wireless driver, can I install that manually? Thanks.
Also when I entered nm-tool in Terminal it shows:
Device eth0
Type: Wired
Driver: r8169
State: disconnected (the cord is plugged in)
Default: no
HW Adress: 00:23:5A:3A:47:14
Capabilities:
Carrier Detect: yes
speed: 100mb/s
Wired properties
Carrier: on
Not sure if this will help

Apologies I misread your post as a wireless issue. Mintwifi is in the /usr/lib not the /lib folder, but what version of mint is this (inxi -S)?

As for your ethernet connection, how is the pc connected to the internet? If via an adsl modem then you need to setup a dsl connection with the account name and password - press Alt+F2 and run nm-connection-editor.

For the wifi you need to know which Broadcom chipset is in use (inxi -N), then refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs, but if you get the wired connection working you can just use the Additional Drivers tool.
