Postby Rahul Wiley on Fri Aug 10, 2012 10:43 am

Hello Everybody...
This is the way i setup internet connection in ubuntu , Bodhi linux, linux mint and other UBUNTU based distros.

1. Open a Terminal

2. Type sudo pppoeconf.

3. Enter password if prompted.

4. Now that would guide me to interactive setup.

5. At the End of Setup, it will ask you,
"Do you want to start the connection at start up."
Give yes if you want.

6. After setup is complete. Start the connection by typing pon dsl-provider in the terminal

7. To terminate the connection type poff

entering plog command shows me i am connected but i am not able to browse i think problem is with dns please help me

this is the message i get from the browser

This webpage is not available
The server at encrypted.google.com can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed. DNS is the network service that translates a website's name to its Internet address. This error is most often caused by having no connection to the Internet or a misconfigured network. It can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing Chromium from accessing the network.
Here are some suggestions:
Reload this webpage later.
Check your Internet connection. Restart any router, modem, or other network devices you may be using.
Check your DNS settings. Contact your network administrator if you're not sure what this means.
Try disabling network prediction by following these steps: Go to the wrench menu > Settings > Under the Hood and deselect "Predict network actions to improve page load performance." If this does not resolve the issue, we recommend selecting this option again for improved performance.
Add Chromium as a permitted program in your firewall's or antivirus software's settings. If it is already a permitted program, try deleting it from the list of permitted programs and adding it again.
If you use a proxy server, check your proxy settings or contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working. If you don't believe you should be using a proxy server, adjust your proxy settings: Go to the wrench menu > Settings > Under the Hood > Change Proxy Settings... and make sure your configuration is set to "no proxy" or "direct."

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Hello, Rahul.

As you use pppoeconf in order to configure your DSL connection, you will have to create the file /etc/resolv.conf manually and enter 2 or 3 nameservers yourself.
Yet, are you sure that you really need pppoeconf?

Some time back when I did not have a DSL router which established the connection to my DSL provider, but only a dumb DSL modem, I had to use pppoeconf. The reason was that there was no way of making my modem authenticate my account towards my provider. So my computer had to do so. At that time I had to create the file /etc/resolv.conf myself and put in some functional nameservers.

Ever since I am using a smart DSL router which establishes the connection to my DSL provider and acts as a DHCP server for my local computers, all I have to do is plugin the network cable and leave the rest to the Network Manager.

Kind regards,
Karl

Hello, Rahul.

Irrespective of the answer to the question whether you are using pppoeconf because you really have to or merely because you got used to it in the past:
A lot of details related to network configuration have been changed in Ubuntu 12.04 / Linux Mint 13.
These changes affect the mechanisms for name resolution as well.
You should definitely look up and read articles about "Ubuntu 12.04", "resolvconf", "dnsmasq".
This article might be a good starting point: DNS in Ubuntu 12.04.
One more helpful article: What is the proper way to change the DNS IP?

Kind regards,
Karl

I installed Linux Mint 13 Mate. Installation was fine. I configured my internet connection by clicking Edit Connections->DSL-> and entered my user name and password. I connected to Internet. But in Firefox Browser, I can browse only a few sites (eg. google, gmail, youtube, http://www.onlinesbi.com, http://www.irctc.co.in). But for majority (eg. wikiperdia, linuxmint.com, facebook etc.) of web sites, Firefox shows a spinning wheel , but never finish loading. From the terminal, I can ping all the web sites by domain names. Again, The tray shows some updates are available. But only a few get updated others show failed.

Can anybody help me.
