Wired Ethernet Connection in LinuxMint 13

Postby wmeler on Fri Nov 16, 2012 4:13 pm

I cannot see "Wired" under All Settings-->Network in LinuxMint 13 with Cinnamon on my friend's computer. Wireless works just fine, and when I click the "+" symbol, it only let's me add a proxy.

When I type sudo ifconfig, I only see "lo" and not "eth0".

His wired ethernet used to work, but now does not at all. Any ideas at all?

For what it's worth, I looked in BIOS and his wireless NIC is enabled. Also, I compared his laptop with Mint 13 to mine which works with wireless, and we can't seem to find any problems. I restarted his computer and the cable modem several times so luck there.

Basically, seeing no sign of a Ethernet card in the linuxmint software, but two LEDs light up physically on the ethernet port: red on the left and orange on the right.

On my laptop: flashing orange on the left and green on the right

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

It doesn't look as if anyone has gotten back to you yet. I'm not the one that asked you to post those outputs. That being said, looking at them, I belive the b43 module, and all those associated with it, are what you need for the broadcom NIC. You said that there is activity lights when a cable is plugged in and connected to the router. This makes me think, that the hardware and drivers are functioning. You said you ran "ifconfig" and you see only the loopback (lo) connection. Try this:

Run ifconfig again, but this time add the -a switch -> ifconfig -a
The -a means all, it should then show you all NICs.

If you see an eth(x) NIC, and it does not have an IP address associated with it, its probably configured "down". As root run -> ifconfig eth(whatever number appears) up

so if it were eth0 it would look like this:
sudo ifconfig eth0 up

if you see no output from that command and the prompt returns, it excuted sucessfully. If it had been configured for dhcp, by this time, it may have already acquired an address. The ifconfig -a command will show if it has an address or not. if it does not have an address, then ->
sudo dhclient eth0

Again, no output means it was sucessful, run the ifconfig -a again and verify an address has been assigned.

Someone else had a similar post. It sounded to me like a network manager problem. Not knowing for sure, and not knowing how to fix network manager, I suggested adding the interface into the /etc/network/interfaces file.

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=150&t=11954

If you don't "need" to use network manager, you can probably use the same "fix".
