Wired connection not working

Postby virus336 on Mon May 05, 2014 9:23 am

Hi there!
I have a problem with my internet connection. I do not know the exact technicalities, but it's a wired connection(on a college campus) where, in order to connect, I just need to plug the cable to my computer. It used to work 2 weeks ago, but since then I went on holiday and I configured a pppoe connection (with the pppoecof command) so as to connect to the internet at home. So I think I messed something up, but I don't know how to fix it.
I would really appreciate it if you could help me.
My configuration: Linux Mint 16 64 bit with KDE in dual boot with Windows 7.

P.S.: I considered posting this in "Networking", but I am either blind, or as a new member I am not allowed to post there.

I would start with
Code: Select all
sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog

to find out what happens. Furthermore,
Code: Select all
ifconfig

will give you information about your network interfaces
Look what happens when you unplug and replug the network cable, maybe the info there gives a clue to what's going on. If necessary post the relevant info here.

You could also investigate what shows up when you right-click network manager / Edit connections. You need to find a wired connection there.
Using Debian, Ubuntu(Gnome!), Lubuntu, Mint, Android, Windows

I still can't connect to the internet.

The result of the ifconfig command is the same, with or without the ethernet cable plugged in.

I tried to find a solution at the link specified by this line of output: "Unmanaged Device found; state CONNECTED forced. (see http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/191889", but I wasn't able to. I also tried sudo service network-manager restart.

I also attached a print screen with my network manager, which always says connected, even if the cable is plugged in or not.

I also wanted to set up ppoe and received this bug in Network Manager. I had to delete as root all the files in the directory /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/ in addition to wired

@aanik
I did as you suggested, I deleted the files from /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/ , made a new wired connection, but the problem is still not solved.

I don't know if you have solved this yet but the result of ifconfig shows it isn't connected as it has not been given an IP4 address.
One possibility is that it is a faulty ethernet cable or wall socket. Can you try a different cable or socket?

I din not solve this.
I tried with a different cable, the result being the same. My network card has 2 small led lights which flash when the cable is connected. Those two lights flash, so I think what I'm dealing with is a software problem/bug.

I kind of solved the problem.
I uninstalled Linux Mint and installed Ubuntu 13.10 in its place and now my internet connection works just fine.
Thank you, all, for your suggestions.
