Installing printer on LAN ??

Postby jimisbell on Mon Jul 04, 2011 12:24 am

I am running Mint 8, I have it installed on two computers on a LAN. Also installed on the LAN is a HP 3800dn color laser jet printer. It appears as 192.168.1.103
I can access it using my browser (Netscape) by entering the address into the browser. This allows me to print, but ONLY PDF files.

I can also connect the printer through the USB port and using HPLIP am able to have full functionality of the printer.

BUT I dont know how to access the printer when it is connected to the LAN....except as noted above, which has the limited functionality of being only able to print PDF files.

I have looked among the "Network" menu on the Control Center but do not know if any of those are the way in. If they are I dont know how to use them. I have also looked in the "Printer" menu on the Control Center, but again if that is the way in, I dont know how to use the software.

I am sure this is an easy thing to do...BUT...I just dont know the method to set the printer up to be accessed directly by the computer "print" function except on the USB port BUT I need it to be accessible from the other computer that is also on the LAN.

Hello jimisbell,

this is really easy. Just go in the menu and type in the search-field "printer" than click on the printer entry.
Than you have to wait a little bit about a minute (up to 5 minutes) and your printer will appear in the navigation-field. Than click on it and follow the installation-dialog.

That's it

So long

Got It!!

The above didnt work because all the search found was documents. BUT.............

Just had to go into "Terminal" mode, type <hp-setup -i> then when it wants to search type <1> and wait for it to find the printer, then follow the instructions for each step. Then do the same on each computer on the network. It is now working on all the computers on the network.

Well, it was solved...for a while....
I have just reinstalled Helena on BOTH my network computers. Also on the network is the HP printer. Using the solution I found above, I got the first computer on the network computer slicker than eel snot. But when I applied the same solution to computer #2 which is running the same Helena....for some reason the second computer cannot print to the printer even though it CAN print the Ubuntu test page!!!! Just cant print a job. Is that strange???

Well, its solved again. But this time the solution was a by product, an unintended consequence.
After installing 11 I had always had a "cannot display in this video mode" message come up so I was trying to fix this problem and I also had no Grub menu. As I resolved these problems, the printer came back!! Dont know what I did that fixed it.

Un pluging and re inserting the HDs then reinstalling Mint 11 solved a whole slew of problems....apparently loose connectors on the HDs
